Giving blood and Anal.

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

One of the questions asked before giving blood is about being male and anal sex with another man. If you have had anal sex you are not allowed to donate.

What about women?

Are we allowed anal sex and to give blood?

Is this just an Irish thing?

Depends on partner's history, doesn't it?

You may not give blood if you have played with a man who has had sexual contact with another man in the last 12 months. It's nothing to do with anal.

You should NOT give blood for 12 months after sex with...

A man (if you're a male). Men who have had anal or oral sex with another man (with or without a condom) are deferred from blood donation for 12 months.

A man who has had sex with another man (if you're a female).

A commercial sex worker.

Anyone who has ever injected themselves with drugs.

Anyone with haemophilia or a related blood clotting disorder who has received clotting factor concentrates.

Anyone of any race who has been sexually active in parts of the world where AIDS/HIV is very common. This includes countries in Africa. (Please be aware that if we have previously made special arrangements for you to donate you should check with our 24 hour helpline on 0300 123 23 23 as we have made some changes to our processes).

This is exactly why we won't meet guys who say they are bi but have straight on their profile.

Firstly it smacks of desperation to lie to get sex, and secondly people have their reasons for not wanting a bi male, this being one of them, preferences that should be respected in our opinion!

A man you meet could have fucked a prostitute. And still be straight.

I agree and although seemingly 'straight' guys could still have secretly fucked a man or prostitute, it's just a case of trying to minimise risk for me.

Blimey, you had me worried there for a minute, seeing as we gave blood last week, and that's a question we have never asked.

But you are wrong, as a woman, having sex with someone who may or may not have previously been with a prostitute, is not a reason to exclude you giving blood.

My colleagues were asked it at the blood drive that came round our offices. Perhaps it's not a nationwide thing.

Yes you do see it wrong. There are several other infections that would disallow you from donating.

I can't donate now due to medication, either. It's not a big deal.

It's a standard form. The question is only whether you have had sex with a commercial sex worker. They don't demand a detailed sexual history. I suspect someone simply misunderstood.

I'm a regular blood donor too....most of the questions are for ALL donors but some are gender specific. I'm not sure if I looked properly at the women's but I think they ask if you have had anal sex with a man who has had anal sex with another man?

So it could be aimed at ghey anal sex more specifically....

Also sex with anyone from sub-Saharan Africa....!

You're not a dirty mutha, Emma. It's just that having given loads of people hiv with infected blood back in the 80s, they're a bit neurotic. It remains to be seen what effect the new, quick hiv test will have on the limits, bearing in mind they're always desperate for donors

As a point on the giving blood thing a woman is barred from giving blood if she has had sex with a man who ha had sex with a man forever where as it is only a 1 year ban if you are a man that has had sex with a man which I thought was a bit wrong had to read it about 4 times to make sure I wasn't getting the wrong end of the stick

"Okay, well I think I am okay then.....but then why do the ask the question at all? "

Because it takes a while for their policy to catch up really. I believe the NHS have now changed for gay and trans people giving blood.they obviously tried to cut corners in screening back in time and have unfortunately learned the hard way with it.

They are such big pile of political crap it takes them ages to even get to grips with something they should of sorted 20 years ago...basically.

In my view anyway.

Risk minimisation.

They will have some technical statistician who will have built-in an assumption that a number of people will have lied.

I have a guilty looking face, and fell down on the "when did you last eat" question on a diet day once

I'm not sure I'd manage to pull it off if I'd had sex with a gay prostitute from Africa while high on drugs

Oo-err, that looks lengthy!

That should be a link to a pdf of the leaflet they give you every time you go.

The relevant bit says:

"Your blood group is checked each time you donate. Every time it is also tested for HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis and HTLV. If your donation gives a positive result for any of these tests you will be contacted and offered further advice. Your donation will have to be destroyed."

Thanks for those!

I can't change how I feel about it though.

• I'm a woman.

• I've had sex with bi men.

• They won't take my blood.

• I know women who are married to bi men.

• They give blood, blissfully unaware of that.

• That's acceptable.

I understand that it's about minimising risk.

But my point is... what's the difference if they test every donation?

I'm on speculation here, but I seem to remember, from the Terrance Higgins website, that with hiv, you are at your most contagious in the first few months when you catch it, but during this time it doesn't always show up in the tests. Which is why an all clear from the clinic today, doesn't necessarily mean you are all clear. So perhaps there is still a statistically significant risk which they are aiming to reduce further?

A woman is as much at risk of contracting hiv. she may not spread as easily with unprotected sex. but she will contract the virus easily especially if receiving ejaculation. its a 6 month watch test if you may think you have contracted and until that time you wouldn't be given the all clear. !-3 people have the HIV virus from certain regions of the world. And they aren't gay either. its the first thing im asked at the clinic when im checked if i have been with anyone from certain sub continents. That said they really should not jump to conclusions about ones honesty about sexual activity and infact i would be more cautious about those whom appear to be perfect.the precautions and technology is there to make it safe now.

Therefore i will be giving my tranny blood to all and everyone whom may need it. and blesing them all with fabulousness

Ok, all those getting upset because men who have had sexual contact with men can't give blood for 12 months....because of the blood transfusion hiv scandal...

Think how I feel! I am never allowed to give blood because I have received a blood transfusion and there was one case, where it wasn't even a proven link, where someone who received donor blood from someone who had once receive donor blood contacted cjd.

Now that is what really sucks.

Oh and the lady who lies on her form so she can give blood despite being disqualified...that is the sickening thing, not them not wanting high risk blood.

All blood carries a risk regardless what someone says on a form or not. Hence thats why they have had such massive feck ups with it. And hence why they have now dropped the "gays have aids" buzz that them, and to be fair a lot of people were on during the 80's and 90's. tut tut.
