Ladies; can you offer any effective advice to reducing hot flushes?

The doctors have taken blood tests but said they won't intervene for two years.

I have been told black cohosh works well. Along side taking vitamin c and a few others.

Maybe try evening primrose oil capsules to reduce hot flushes.

Best check with doc or pharmacy first if you are taking any prescription drugs as this can counteract some.

Hope this helps, hot flushes are a nightmare.

My I can't wait for the menopause . Hopefully I take after my sister she sailed through it,unlike my mum. I have a feeling I'm going to take after my mum! I'm sure I'm perimenopausal, when I last went to the doctors regarding something else and asked whether I could be tested to find out,he advised me to just go with it .

I took sage tablets when I was put into early menopause after a problem I had a couple of years ago. I suffered quite bad with hot flushes especially at night. They did help a little bit.

Have a look at the first episode of Doctor in The House, it was on BBC 1 I think. The woman on that had hot flushes which were considerably reduced through diet and exercise.

"wtf is going on with menopause though? i'm not looking forward to mine at all, whenever that's gonna be."

It doesn't have to be bad. I've had hardly any symptoms apart from the ones you're supposed to get i.e. periods stopping. I know I've been very lucky but don't dread it until you know how it's going to affect you, it might not be as bad as you think. The good news is that frequent sex is medically advised

My mum had a hysterectomy so didn't have any menopause. Well thanks suppose it might not be that bad just it does sound terrible, from people offline as well as in here. All this sweating and flushing.

I had a full hysterectomy 21 yrs ago ovaries out & everything been on Hrt ever since & only just started with hot flushes about a year ago.

Doc says it's the brain putting me through it at my age & not the fact I have no ovaries.

A healthy diet, lower alcohol amount & get some exercise in & it does help but Hrt helps me the most.

V here. I'm loving the menopause!

I went to to doctor a couple of years ago, told him I couldn't recall having a period for a while. He said it was most likely menopause and that was it. I

I have the occasional hot flush. Usually at night and more likely if I've been drinking red wine. Someone once told me that ginger is great for reducing hot flushes and I drink lemongrass and ginger tea by the pint through the day. I don't know if that's working but I don't really suffer from any symptoms necessarily related to menopause.

Weight gain is an issue I've not enjoyed but I'm exercising like a loonie and eating random lettuce leaves and it's starting to come off.

V xx

Yes, my gp told me that women should ideally have sex daily, it keeps the blood flow good to your genitals and helps ward off vaginal atrophy (I know who'd be a woman eh!?).

Bad menopause gets more publicity, there's no point telling people "I'm 59 and not sweating or flushing" they wouldn't be interested

I've been going through it for a year, apart from now getting period spotting that I didn't have before and things like my skin changing I'm sailing through it, but I have a mirena coil with hormone replacement in it.

My mum didn't even know she had had hers, her periods just stopped when she was 40 and that was it.

Just a side note though. Do you definetly k ow its the menopause.

I had terrible symptoms a few years ago, horrendous hot flushes and night sweats where so bad, plus I gained so much weight. Turned out it was a hormone problem and once I got on the right medication it was sorted.

Yeah true, people don't complain about having an easy menopause.

My vaginas already shrunk but it lubes up ok, not sure if i'm in the peri-menopause or not. I've no other symptoms yet if i have, plus on my period right now - will be glad to get rid of these.

Cool drinks, heating down, thin clothing and a small electric or portable fan. I just get on with whatever I'm doing and wipe the sweat off, then jump in a cool shower afterwards. It's not good when you're fat either because you get sore and itchy skin because you're always sweating.

ive had mine for about 2 years, only the hot flushes, no mood swings,no headaches etc....there is still a stigma attached to hrt, though nowadays the advice is to start as early as possible, then the dosage can be less, for a shorter time;there's no evidence that black cohosh or clover etc work at all.

a slab of salt rock crystal kept in fridge though is great at 2am when youre pouring sweat and cant sleep!

The only thing that worked for me was the truly wonderful HRT.

I tried all other things such as herbal remadies, no alchol, various other prescribed medicines but nothing worked at all except HRT.

There are some scare stories about side effects of HRT but many turned out to be untrue and for me if i didnt have HRT i would be without a husband or family or job or house etc. Plus i would be wet sweaty and hot ALL the time, the hot flushes made me close to passing out at times and they were approx every half hour day and night, i wouldnt remember anything, i would suffer headaches plus various other pains and i would be extremly depressed

I call them my tropical moments, the worst symptom I have struggled with is the itchy skin. I can cope with the flushes, which weren’t too bad, but the itching came at any time of the day and night and drove me mad. I eventually found the answer in a combination of nettle tincture, and vitamin C. I take the tincture three times a day and make sure I have plenty of fruit and vegetables, as well as adding a vitamin C supplement to my diet. I drink more water because I read that it helps flush out the system. I also cut down on drinks that contained caffeine. It all worked really quickly, which was such a relief.. hope this helps with something

Just a point here but menopause is the period of time when a woman has stopped menstruating past a certain age.

Peri-menopause is the process before that.

"It's really interfering with our nighttime spooning too. Making us both sad as we're limpets all night "

Night times can be the worse. As sleep becomes restless and who wants to spoon a boiling furness hahaha

I've been in my first menopause for 7 months now, the first 6 months weren't so nice. I got so hot at times it was like having sun stroke I've been taking cod liver oil and evening primrose , for the same amount of time and it's settled some what. The chills can be worse than the hot flushes....it's literally like a switch and you can feel your whole body flair up and go

I've just started to take HRT this month...so this should be interesting And, I have it all to come again, as I'm in a pre induced menopause. I have a 3 monthly injection that halts it all, to stop my alien fibroids taking over. They've shrunken with amazing effect so far, so I can ride it out like a hormonal trooper ....plus now my top lip doesn't break out in a sweat no more, its become less of a pain in the ass.

I did read when I read a few forums and sites, in one MEDICAl section about what to do whilst in work and you 'breakout'

If you start to cry in work, just take yourself off, somewhere quiet. As people don't need to see that. .... Hahah ermmm like I want to cry if my pencil snaps or a leaf floats to the ground and a car squished it.!!! ...Ride out those tropical moments.

Not all of us are symptomatic! I'm 55 and peri-menopausal with hardly any symptoms. Increasing calcium intake is actually a myth. Countries with the highest dairy consumption have the highest rate of osteoporosis. Magnesium and weight bearing exercise is far better protection as is vitamin D3 supplementation..

We don't, but taking HRT is like a cross between menopause and puberty. I had really bad night sweats but they didnt last long. I cant remember how long now. I think it was only weeks? I have been having a lot of night sweats again, and moodiness, and uber tiredness. And forgetfulness. Maybe it is hormonal...Anyways. Hope it passes for you soon. x

I'm in menopause following breast cancer treatment aged 36 so I'm not allowed hrt. I've been shocked at the lack of information and support out there for woman and I've had to work it out for myself. For the hot flushes, Reduce caffeine, I drink green tea through the day and avoid caffeine at night. Triggers are also Alchol, refined sugars especially chocolate. Dairy is also a trigger but you need to include dairy in your diet for calcium. I take vit d supplements and you need calcium for the vit d to be absorbed for your bone stength. A healthier diet and exercise make a massive improvement.

On a plus note I have no hormones anymore so I've lost that hysterical girl streak....I get it now, this is what it's like to be a man ha! x

I saw a programme a couple of years ago called The Food Hospital. In one episode there was a woman who suffered badly with hot flushes. She was taking statins so couldn't have HRT. They put her on a natural high oestrogen diet and in a few weeks the hot flushes had almost completely stopped.

Even though there is not one shred of evidence to support anyone taking statins, let alone women or women over 50. Nasty side effects too.

Exercise and healthy rest. Exercise is a major boon - and if you include some yoga, you'll also reduce stress levels plus increase flexibility.

Extra attention to sufficient rest and high quality sleep is important. Adjust your schedule as well as your bedroom conditions.
