Try with him on his side knees drawn up rather than on his knees. His butt will be more relaxed that position.
Lube and something small, like a finger if his 'valve' has only been one way so far. It takes a little while for it to understand it can work both ways. |

Trim your nails and file them nice and smooth and rounded (not freshly cut!)
I'd always go for some lube rather than spit - I can take a fist and don't like anything up there which isn't lubed!
