I (Batman) have recently started taking an SSRI to help with a bit of work stress - starting to look elsewhere, hopefully should be outta there soon! Anyway, one of the side effects is anorgasmia - the inability to orgasm - which I have developed. I can cum, but only by myself and with a huge amount of effort, to the point where most of the time I cannot be bothered.
Now there are some silver linings. Lasting a long time allows me to concentrate on Robyn, and my erections are the biggest they've been. However, regardless the sexual frustration of having sex day after day with no release is immense, and it's also starting to affect our confidence somewhat - I still think she's amazing regardless and tell her.
Anyway, we're hoping others on here have experienced this and how they overcame it, being other things to try that got them off, things to lower the frustration without lowering the desire etc Sensitive issue but I figure to try and have some fun with it! |

Not a medical solution, but I suggest the fuck em approach
Leave the tablets at home and bugger off somewhere quiet with Robyn for a weekend, miles away from anywhere. Just chill out and dont think about work, as im sure they wont think about you

I would not recommend you take this advice. If you have started to take the tablets withdrawing them sharply could give you terrible side effects which your GP should of warned you about. Withdrawal should be gradual to let your body adjust. Just stopping and going into the back of beyond would be foolish. Ask your GP for advise. That's what they are there for. |

In fact, depending on the drug and dose, just stopping could prove catastrophic, Google it. If it's not working for you, see your doc, there are many different types of anti depressant/anxiety medications, I've tried many, and eventually found what works for me. Don't suffer in silence, but for gods sake, get medical advice before you change anything. Good luck |

He said he started taking them recently so it shouldn't take too long to get off them.
I would strongly advise you to look for an alternative solution to deal with the stress in you life. |

Wow, never expected such a turnout. Thank you very much.
Am due to meet my Dr this week, so will ask about trying another ssri to see if it lessens the anorgasmic effect. Until then I guess it's relax & remove any pressure from making it happen. Enjoy the journey, not the destination. I don't hope to be on them for that long, and have already started putting remedies in place to get out of the situation, sadly time doesn't always pass fast enough.
"Have you tried a Wand to stimulate without giving yourself an injury? Maybe a new sensation would help. Inbox hubby for his tips if you're interested "
Anything is worth a go! Feeling rather pent up - when the puppet daughter from the dolmio advert is looking hot you know it's bad haha sadly we're outside your age range to message, could you send us one please?
Failing that, I can't see how a reverse gangbang would hurt the chances eh? Haha I wish... |

This is such good advice. An incredible amount of people have terrible problems because they withdrawn from these medications too fast. I speak with personal experience of this. The only way I can describe it as horrific.
My personal opinion is that doctors are too quick to dish them out and, in many
cases are too blasé about withdrawl side effects when recommending people come off them. It pains me to say that, as my own father was a doctor and I have huge respect for the profession.
I personally had a huge problem with the issue you describe and, frankly, believe that my body is recovering from this side-effect a number of years after stopping taking the meds. I noticed many side effects from the one I took, but inability to orgasm was the one where I felt there was incontrovertible proof that the tablets had changed me. I was a sexual zombie for years.
Please understand - Im not saying people shouldn't take them. However, I do think people should be wary of the side effects and keep in mind that these are powerful chemicals that change brain chemistry.
OP - I have to say that it seems like a life situation that is causing you to reach for the tablets. Personally, I think people should try to avoid taking them if it's a life event e.g. a bereavement, problems at work. In those situations it's better to make the necessary lifestyle changes or wait for time to heal than take a chemical that masks the underlying problem. Various therapies, counselling, exercise etc should be at least considered.
Sorry to drone on, but my experience with these medications is profound and has changed me.
Just to repeat - I'm not saying that there aren't people who need to take them and who simply couldn't function without their help. |

"if you cant cope with your job without such medication perhaps its not for you.move on"
Unfortunately, in the current market, that's easier said than done (without voluntarily putting yourself out of work of course, try and get financial help then!), especially if you have rent/a mortgage/bills to pay/a family to support.
I used to be on Citalopram when a highly stressful job helped throw me into depression and I said I'd only use them if it was absolutely necessary and I'd stay there until I found another job... That took 6-7 months and I was barely fit to work at all by that point.

if you havent been on them for long then it may take some time for your body to adjust. Your doctor may try putting you on something of the same thing or something different. Good luck either way xx B&C |

I have been on medication (not the same as you) for years which had similar problems. Ultimately try not to worry. The plus side is the time you will be able to last and the pleasure you will be able to give her. I had an ex with whom I rarely came, due to the medication I was on. The sex was amazing, however. Just enjoy. Your wife will understand, I'm sure. And, as has been mentioned, switching to another drug or as and when you are weaned off the SSRIs could well sort the issue. Your GP should be able to advise and help. Matt |

I don't hope to be on them for that long, and have already started putting remedies in place to get out of the situation" Sounds good! May I humbly recommend to read Psychotropic Drugs by Jim Read? While it doesn't address the question you ask it gives informed advice on how to stop SSRI. Just in case your doctor only give you a 10 mins appointment.
I know to your frustations, but on a much smaller scale, common colds or paracetamol make me anorgasmic too - and OMG HOW frustrating is that!!!
With an ex we were on the waiting list with Relate for a similar problem as they also had psycho-sexual therapy for couples, for example, sexual desensitisation excercizes, or, in your case, the opposite.
And you pay at your own discretion. |

As a side note, if OP was taking medication for a physical problem would you brush his condition aside and tell him to "go for a walk" or "find another way of dealing with your problem" ???
I don't think so.
Mental illness isn't weakness. Taking medication for a mental illness isn't a sign of weakness.
Yes, exercise can help combat depression but that's not the only condition SSRIs are used for.
As others have said, see your GP if you experience undesirable side effects (of ANY medication). That is what they're there for. They might be able to suggest alternative medication or tips to overcome the side effects.
I'm getting down from my soapbox now but it really irritates me when people brush aside mental illness. The person experiencing it has it bad enough, don't you think? |

You could always speak to your doctor and let them know what is going on. They should be very understanding and could try a different medication which doesn't affect your sex life.
I went through the exact same thing a couple of months ago, not from medication but was having a bad time with personal life and it was so annoying! I feel your pain x |

Many people have no idea about the effect severe stress or depression - unfortunately this ignorance lead to the "take a long walk" and "oh just get over it" comments. In any case I would not wish it on anyone, even if they demonstrated insensitivity of one's circumstances. |
