If I was concerned about it I wouldn't be bothered who examined me. Hope you get it checked out, its probably nothing but better to know than worry x

I wouldn't care what sex they were, I would be more interested in finding out the diagnosis. Go to the docs, there is nothing to be embarrassed about, they have seen it all before. Good luck

Absolutely! You can ask for a chaperone and have a female nurse in with you during the examination if you are feeling a bit unsure. Don't ignore lumps, it's not worth risking your health because of embarrassment.

Ask the GP practice for a specific gender if there is more than one doctor.

It doesnt matter. you need to get checked out. Female nurses do smear tests and to be honest I prefer that to a male. But in the end your health is priority. good luck xx

It wouldn't bother me if it was a male or female dr, if it's something that's needs checking urgently then I would be grateful to get it seen to quickly by either sex

I don't think they can refuse to let you have someone in with you.

Take a friend in with you if you're concerned. Is it the specialist who's male?

Is there more than one hospital in your area ? if so, ask if there are female consultants in oncology in a another hospital. Then ask to be referred to that hospital. You have choices now in where you are treated.

It's normally a male consultant with female nurses, or take a good friend with you.

I don't mind to be honest as some male doctors can be more sympathetic, though in this day and age, you will more than likely have a female nurse in attendance as well!

I'll be honest if I needed to see an oncologist their gender would be the last thing on my mind.

However I know that this is a real concern for many women. Op what is it you're concerned about in particular in as far as seeing a male is concerned?

You have the right to ask for a chaperone and they're obliged to provide one,no male Dr that I know would examine a female without asking for a chaperone or asking if you want one

I hope it all turns out ok x

You don't need to explain, it's understandable. Do you feel able to tell the hospital this?

I would see either if it was urgent, there is normally a nurse as well. A doctor also has to protect himself. I've never heard of not being able to take a friend. Please go to your appointment and good luck. X

I saw a female dr a few weeks ago and she asked me if I would like a chaperone before she examined me. I didn't feel the need for one. Luckily I've never felt uncomfortable where medical examinations are needed. Ring ahead of your appointment and explain that you would like a chaperone present, you will not be refused this request x

Speak to your hospitals patient advice liason service about this because you are entitled to have a chaperone, that nurse is very wrong to tell you you're being silly

I'm local to you and have had a number of hospital visits the last couple of months which have required internal investigations. Each time I have been offered a chaperon or a friend to attend and where I required a procedure I had two female nurses and a male consultant.

It is something you just need to keep asking for.

I'm with the others on this. I wouldn't bother if it was male or female, would just want it checked out sweetie.

You can often ask for a female nurse if it is a male doctor and you are uncomfortable. X

Are your dogs not able to be left alone for a few hours while your partner goes with you? Do you have a good neighbour who you could take? As honeypot suggested, contact PALS and explain the situation to them. Do they have a female vicar, hospitals always have a chaplain on site xxx

Actually the information you have been given is wrong. I am from your area and worked in all of the local hospitals. It is the hospital policy to have at least a female HCA in the room when you are being examined by a male. This HAS to be in place for muslim women especially but doctors will often insist on this anyway to cover themselves for false accusation.

Just go along and when you get there, say that you understand there will be a female member of staff in the room if I am to be seen by a male doctor? If anyone argues with this, which they won't, tell them that it is actually your right and Trust policy to provide this service and if you were Muslim this is a human right.

You should be fine though honey xxx

You're not being silly & I am sure somewhere in the building they can find a female to chaperone you. Be firm but calm in your approach.

good luck xx

Consultants have too much to lose professionally to examine a patient without a witness, usually a nurse or a healthcare assistant, especially a male Consultant examining a females genital area. You are well within your rights to insist on a nurse being present if he does try to go ahead with the examination without a chaperone. The nurse you spoke to was obviously trying to play down your fears, but unfortunately did it in the wrong way. Dont worry. Best of luck with the diagnosis and so sorry you have suffered so much from your attack. xxxx

"It's normally a male consultant with female nurses "

That's a big sweeping generalisation!

Anywho - take a friend with you. If you've been given an appointment already I'd advise sticking with it and taking a "safe person" with you if you're unsure. A re-referral to somewhere with a female consultant would take more time on top, whereas it sounds like you're near enough ready to be seen through this referral. Being seen in a timely manner is important for these issues. Good luck. X

they have to chaperone.. All male doctors that are examining you intimately have to.. Code of ethics.. If they don't, its within your right to refuse...

hi...if your gp surgery is like mist on the wirral then there is a good mix of male n female drs. ive had problems in the past and tbh it was last thing on my mibd. i just wanted it dealt with asap. i had female dr just because she happened to be on duty day of my appt. but then the consultznt at the hospital was male. at the end of the day these are professionals that are use to dealing with lots of things like this day in day out. Arrowe Park was brilliant with me...but drop in centres are in wallasey and st caths near to where you are. go love...you will be fine. xx

Contact the Patient Advice and Liason people. They're at every hospital and this is the kind of dilemma they are there for.

I've got a number for the one in the hospital near you and I'll Pm you.
