Try last minute.com or late rooms, both quite good.
I'd suggest google, I know it's obvious but there's so many places that aren't well known.
Thistle hotel in haydock isn't bad for cheap and cheerful. |

If you're wanting Runcorn then definitely don't stay at the Thistle in Haydock ... It's 30-40 mins away lol! |

There's the Travel Lodge in Preston Brook or the Holiday Inn not far from there either, both on the outskirts of Runcorn, but you'd have to give them a ring to see what their policy is on early check inn.
Or there are both Premier Inn and Travel Lodge within a few hundred yards of each other in Widnes. |
