Help I think I'm in trouble -IT Related

I have been bloody stupid. At work I have been given the password for some WiFi in our building and I logged on fab to check some messages etc couple times this morning

I just realised I have used this works frigging WiFi to do it.

I'm in bit of panic now. So here is what I know.

It was on my phone and the device doesn't have my name in just Galaxy S4

It is password protected for a cetain team and I was given the password on the sly by a mate

I asked when given the password last week about monitoring usage etc as I might be be streaming music accessing drop box etc and he said no one does or cares so fill your boots etc

Team is IT savy

So im paranoid and panicing now. WiFi turned off and I don't know what to do next. Hopefully no comeback but if questions start to be asked !!!

So was I however I will say its a small team that implements and tests new tech and not the main Internet connection which is blocked porn/gambling etc. Probably less than a dozen people access it and fact I only had password a week

Well work on the principle theres no real way for them to locate you. At best they've logged the Ip and possibly mac address of your phone. IP probably dynamic (so will change next time you log on) and mac is useless unless you are a repeat offender.

I really wouldn't worry - probably wouldn't log back on via that route again though!

Plus chances are they are all using the connection for very similar activities! Pervy bunch IT boys and girls!

Well I been using it since last week and it was music streaming mostly as I say (odd Facebook and whatsapp or whatever else runs on background) and it was only today I was stupid so unless they can make a link between my music streaming IP address and activity here I might be OK. Can't do anything about Mac address

I'm leaving WiFi off now by the way

As I say - you'll be fine - Most logins etc aren't sent in clear text so unless they have a supercomputer sat there to crack the 128bit encryption and nothing better to do I think you'll be fine!

The issue for me is they might trace it back to me and that could cause a few problems as my work is very a strict on what you can and can't access at work over a work connection

i dont think the wifi can easily be interrogated as to an individual browsing history .. your desk pc lappy or phone has its own browsing history ...fabs and adult sites will either be blocked or not depending on the settings of the provider

Ok, I've worked in IT for 10 years.

To be fair, the IT team are most likely having to deal with more serious situations than someone going onto this site. There are tools which can rebuild what users have gone onto. You could potentially get your fab username and look at pics and identify it as you if they made use of those tools.

Other than that, the only other way is to track your Mac. But there is nothing to link your Mac with you.

If you're paranoid, temporarily disable your fb profile for a week until any potential heat has been lost. That way, if any links are traced, they cannot see you or the profile.

Also. Don't use their WiFi for 2 weeks as they can track which other sites you are going on to build a picture of who it is!

However... This is not a think most Admins would care about.

X

I think you'll find that even if your company does monitor/block sites that this little "back door" will not be monitored.

I am assuming but I do know for sure if you have wi-fi in your work you will have a server. If you do have a server it keeps records of all websites visited. It may even send alerts to the system administrator when somebody goes on a website they shouldn't go on. As you got on the wi-fi without them knowing it was you then I think you will be lucky. They cannot prove it was you who logged on to the wi-fi. However if they ask to see your phone they could prove it was you. I think you should get away with it this time. I wouldn't do it again though. Make sure your fiend doesn't tell anyone he or she gave you the wifi password.

I am 100% certain it will be against company policy to look at sites like fab in work. It depends if your company has a server or not. If there is only a few of you who use a computer in the office they may not have a server. If a lot of people use a computer they will have a server. If your company has a server I guarantee it logs every website visited by every user no matter what company computer they use. What happens next depends on whether the logs of websites visited are read or it has alerts set up for when somebody visits a website they they shouldn't.

In short never log onto websites like fab when in work. Even if you do it on your own phone using the company wi-fi or your own laptop, ipad etc using the company wi-fi. It would be silly to get sacked for logging into Fab.

If you want to log into fab do it on your phone and don't use the company wi-fi. Just use your phones internet connection.

I think that a good rule is not to look at anything on a work computer that you wouldn't want your boss to see. I was embarrassed enough by the amount of dresses I'd looked at on e-bay when the IT Dept came down to fix my pc.

Well as I say it was a mistake using the WiFi to log here but so far seem to have had no come back at all. I'm off for 2 weeks now so when I go back will logon the wifi again but be careful to shut it off when I need to check Fab.

I'm sure you will be fine. I use work wifi for fab all the time..! As long as it's in my time (lunch or after hours etc) no one cares..!

Plus, they only tend to delve into these things for a specific reason, I'm sure you logging onto fab isn't cause for concern..!

I work in IT.

Yes we can see what people browse, but we are all the same and simply don't care.

However, should you do anything to upset the management and they can ask to see your browsing history.

So, relax about what you have done, but don't give anyone easy ammunition and don't use company computers or WiFi for anything remotely private.

I reckon you will be fine. If it wasnt blocking porn/gambling/streaming/social network sites already then others will be using it for that.
