my son split up from his girlfriend about 18 months ago.
they have a kid (granddaughter).

What? Age has nothing to do with being taken in to care. And as unorthodox a relationship it would be it would still be legal, the kid wouldn't be at risk - why should she end up in care? |

The parents have split for their own reasons and the child is yet another that is suffering because of it. You should take pride in the fact you can be one constant figure for your granchild, no matter what. You should take pride in the privilage being a grandparent is, to be able to guide and love your grandchild along what might be a rocky path to be there whenever she has problems with either of her parents.
Remember how quickly a mood can change once you have shot your bolt, remember just how awkward things could quickly be if you fuck.
