We have a memory card absolutely packed with cracking photos which we would love to post on our profile.
The trouble is that when we try to view/download them on the camera a "file error" message comes up!!
Any suggestions?

Check the memory card isnt in lock position, take the card out and you should see a little slide lock on it, if this is in locked position it wont let you transfer files |

If it is corrupted then you can use a program such as 'Recuva' to erm... recover the lost data.
It's usually caused by manky contacts though, and a quick puff of air in the port, and a wipe of little metal contacts on the card will often fix things. |

Could be the card has become corrupted somehow ?? Maybe buy a USB card reader adapter from maplins ( only a couple of quid )
As previous poster said you can use software to recover the pics but only if you can read the card in the first place |

As already mentioned try cleaning the contacts - the best thing for this is a pencil eraser ( purposefully didnt say rubber around you lot!!;-)
If that doesn't work, does your computer still the card when you put it in? Ie show the capacity etc?
If so then, as also mentioned, there are software products available that should be able to recover most of the stuff - I always use r-studio.
If it physically isn't recognised, there are companies who can do more, but it's generally costly and obviously if they are successful will have access to all your files.

After re-reading you are accessing them on your camera.
Remove the memory stick and go direct to your pc as it could be a whole host of things inbetween or a problem with the contacts in the camera itself.
Good luck, I've been there and it's not fun.

Ok. Will try that.
The camera tells me there are over 200 images on the card but it will only open about 30. One other briefly opens before being replaced by a "file error" message.

Image 31 has probably been corrupted. This can sometimes happen if the card has been put in a pc and one of the images has been altered. Just put the card in a computer then cut and paste them into a folder. Format the card after in your camera. |

Does the camera have wireless or bluetooth? Try just connecting and using Explorer to view the files without opening them, then cut/copy/move to a location on your pc/network.

Thanks for the advice.
Now this word "format"?
Perhaps I should explain that my fab name should be "techno cretin"
I would ask my kids to sort this as they are very clued up but I reckon they would be horrified by the photos - "mum & dad having sex. Disgusting!!" |

Now this word "format"? format basically means erase and start again so only do that once you have retrieved all your holiday snaps lol

just an idea but if you have another camera that takes your card then try that if not then a reader would be good idea or your laptop or computer if it can read you could go to a photo machine and see whats on it if no one is about to perv lol |

Download a free Data recovery program called "Recuva" Then, if your computer won't recognize the card you will need to do a Quick/fast format on it (Do not do a full format) A Quick/fast format will only reset the index to zero and it will not remove the data ie: your pictures.
Then run Recuva to recover your pictures off the card and place them onto your hard drive.
Do a full format on the card before you re-use it. If it does it again bin the card. If you get stuck remember Google is your friend.
