GUM Clinic Visit
Jump to: Newest in thread
I recently went to my local GUM clinic for routine tests. I took a gay male friend with me to be checked as well.
He was in there for forty five minutes. I was in there for ten.
He was advised of all possible STIs and symptoms. I was not.
He was asked if he used condoms and was offered some. I was not.
He was given a very thorough exam. I was not even looked at 'down there'. I even had to do my own swab!
All tests came back clear for us both, but I was left feeling that I had received a substandard service and now feel the need to go somewhere else to be checked again, just in case.
What have other people experienced in their local clinics? Am I alone or is this the kind of thing I should expect? |

"Gay promiscuous men are in the highest STI risk group.
Did you inform them you are a swinger ?
Mrs went recently, told them she was a swinger and was given the full works!
"
I did tell them, and they just tutted and sighed...

Slightly rude of them i would of complained about that. I opted to tell them so they could give me all the protection/advice they could. I did have to do the swap myself but i opted for that as im not particularly keen on the tests.
Did they offer a Hep b jab or a blood test? i got offered it but you can request it yourself, its not a common jab they give out (usually just for nurses/health profession people).
All the same if every things ok i wouldnt worry about it too much but definetly next time express for the jab and blood test . Mrs xx |

Yes whenever I have been Ive had a full inspection, but I am always honest about who when and what when they ask why I'm there. It's fun looking the doc straight in the eye as im sat there in my work business suit telling him what a slut I've been |

If you aren't presenting any symptoms they do not examine or swab you, they just take a urine sample. If its your first time, or first time for a while they will take a blood sample too for HIV and syphillis, other wise try will skip that too.
Not to get too personal but if you use condoms and don't have unprotected anal sex with gay men then you are pretty low risk.

Never been offered condoms and, too be honest, it's always been, as you say, a rather brief ten minute wee and blood test .
I did go once when an exes mum was there, I didn't know. That the night the whole pub seemed to be aware I had been there.... Yes I did report her and yes she wasn't there the next time I went. I wasn't bothered that oriole knew I had been for a check, proud of myself to be honest. More to the point if I had something major, I really wouldn't want the world and his wife knowing ..... Think it's called patient confidentiality x |

seems odd that there are such differences in the treatments |

I always get the full works, as I want a proper screening, I don't really fancy waiting for 'something to grow' before having it checked out.
I'm honest about swinging and with partners but when asked if any of the men I've slept with have slept with any men I tell them it's swinging not a relationship so as far as I know possibly.
I hate having the swabs done, but I do go, I had my text yesterday
The peace of mind they provide is priceless but I never get their condoms, I like my own brand |

I get swabs and blood tests every time and to be honest not sure how you managed to do your own swabs! Were you both treated by the same person as it does seem that there was a big difference in how you were treated |

They did do a blood test but not a urine test. My friend was given the Hep B jab, even though he has only slept with one person in his life, but it was not even mentioned to me. When asked how many people I had slept with I was honest as I didn't think it was an absurd number but again got the tut and sigh....
Think I will go elsewhere next time! |

Same person treated us. Maybe it was because we both went for different reasons. He had found his partner was cheating so wanted to get checked and I was going and pretty much admitting to sleeping around I suppose. But I would have thought they see people like me all the time so would not bat an eyelid. |

I don't think you should go elsewhere, I think you should say something to them about judgemental attitudes and having a fair and complete screening.
I know I would but then I learn long ago when I had my first baby that dignity is best left outside and collected (or scooped up) on leaving |

In that case I'd definitely report them as your sex life has nothing to do with the person treating you beyond medical treatment and they should have remained professional whatever their personal opinion. You're saying you'll go somewhere else whereas the next person may decide they just won't got for testing again because of the judgement of someone who should be encouraging regular testing |

Good point. That had not occured to me. I hate complaining in person, so think I will send a letter. |

You'd have thought it would be a standard service across all GUM clinics with them being an nhs service! I've been to 3 in my area and they were all very different. |

For them to tutt and sigh is ot of order
Ive never been treated that way and go regular,i tend to use the health hub of my drs rather than an open clinic tho as its a bit nicer have to book more in advance tho.
Always get a full check and given condoms, talk to your drs see what services they offer. |

First time I went got the full works interrogated on my sexual conquests, blood and swabs and handed condoms. This time more honest and admired to being a swinger. Took own swap had bloods and no condoms. But peace of mind of clear results isn't that why we go not the service. |

My clinic always offer the full works too! It is then my decision what I want done! I have always been offered condoms too and if I think they are going to forget I will ask! As u know us ladies can get urine infections and other infections that are not necessarily sexually related! So free antibiotics are a bonus too! My clinic also do a coil clinic, I chose to go there to get it done rather than my gp's. They did my smear test too! The staff are always friendly too. Personally I think swingers look after their sexual health far better than anyone else which is very reassuring. |
