….is this pointless? Does it only make sense to use protection for both, or neither? With regards to STIs, not contraception.

It depends how far you want to take it.

We don't use protection for oral.

If people are that worried about their safety they wouldn't kiss or anything.

The ph environment of the mouth is different to the vagina (7 Vs around 4), which is going to affect how STDs (among other infections) thrive. You are more likely to get affected through vaginal sex than oral. Obviously oral sex is not risk-free, but a lot of people don't like the taste of condoms (even the flavoured ones) and, despite the risks, they choose to engage in unprotected oral. The risk of getting STD via unprotected vaginal or anal sex is higher, and therefore more people choose to have protection when having full penetration.

Oral is much lower risk as most STIs cannot survive in the mouth, and there’s never been a recorded case of transmission of HIV from oral sex.

No sex isn't without risk but if you trust your partner and get checked out fairly regularly would you really want to be celibate as I know what my answer would be?

I know, but can’t imagine oral with a condom or dam is very pleasurable. Leads me back to my original thought, if using condoms for sex but then doing oral without protection is pointless 🤔
