I don't mind hi how are you, it's a good way to start a conversation and can go in any direction. However I wouldn't reply to this kind of message if their profile was blank.

Any message that is sincere and explains why you are approaching to that profile in particular, instead of thousand of others, saying what you like in particular of them and what you have and might enjoy in common.
