It's all about selecting the right mix of people so that everyone has similar expectations and get on well together. Don't expect to have a nice relaxing time, I have organised quite a few and its mostly all work and no play when you are the host. But a buzz when everything goes well.

Make sure you know the people, went to a party a few years ago, where my camera was stolen, taken out of my handbag will add, and also tried to take a phone that was a work phone for the guy I had gone with.
I was lucky to get my camera back, and the guy I was with we saw the person with the phone and got it back, but it ruined the party. |

I'm assuming you mean a house party? My recommendations would be:-
~ clearly defined 'social' area and 'play' area (for those who decide they don't want to play)
~ a fancy dress theme and/or some ice-breaker games
~ only invite people you know and trust, and maybe have a trusted male "co-host", in the unlikely event of anyone having a bit too much to drink
~ the afore-mentioned vol-au-vents and sausages on sticks, with a collecting tin marked "contributions" next to it!
