How to dress for a social meet?

Just wondering how women prefer a guy to dress for a first social meet (or first meet full stop)? Personally I'd go smart casual so a shirt but probably jeans to tone it down. Maybe it's my age but I think a t-shirt isn't making the effort.

If it's a casual daytime coffee , a t-shirt is perfectly acceptable

It depends on the woman.

I appreciate effort so it would depend on the tee shirt and jeans. A faded, ill fitting band tee shirt from 1993 with baggy jeans and scruffy trainers would put me off but jeans that fit well and a plain white tee wouldn't.

Have to say it's hypothetical so far. But I feel if a lady decides she'd like to meet you then absolutely make the effort. I can see how a t-shirt would work in the right situation certainly.

You want to make a good impression it’s not a night out with the lads.

Clean trainers or smart shoes, clean denims and a nice top. Even a t-shirt as long as it’s ironed.

If a man decides he'd like to meet us both of us will make an effort. I don't view it as an effort in any arduous way, if I'm going out I'll make sure I'm groomed and well dressed for platonic friends, fab friends, family etc.

I think so long as the clothes are clean and the person is well groomed and smells good I'm not so bothered what they are wearing... T-shirt +jeans would be fine

It depends on the situation.

I've met a guy for a social at a coffee shop in his work clothes when he was on his lunch break.

If we were going to a pub in an evening I'd expect more effort.
