HPV why is it like having the black death?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Hi everyone,
I recently discovered I may have caught HPV from my ex girlfriend which only came to light when I questioned what it meant as I had never heard of it before and this came to light during a routine smear test.
It then came out that a previous partner had given her HPV in the past.
Now before you burn me at the stake, I don't sleep around I am carefull I have since had full bloods done at the clinic and am clear for everything else.
There is no test a straight male can have for HPV or I would have it.
If and I say if I have the HPV it is the high risk version not the low risk which leads to warts on private parts.
Now I have spoken to a nurse at my doctors who has reassured me it's nothing to be worried about we all have it in our bodies waiting for it to be trigger at some stage during our sexual life 80% of us will get it some point and having it does not increase the female getting cervical cancer.
Smear tests should pick up anything irregular anyway.
I am honest and upfront about everything in my life and will probably have to wait the 1 to 2 years for my body to be immune to it, but I guess my question is will any females consider me now and are there other people in the same boat as me and how have you found living with it?

Incredibly common. I'm on the HPV vaccination program but right at the top end of the age bracket it's approved for. Gardisil 9 protects again 9 of the strains that are linked to various cancers. There are hundreds of strains from cold sore strains to foot verrucae to Genital warts. Yes most people have been exposed to it in their lives and most people's immune systems fight it off sufficiently well that you don't have any problems, others less so. Sexual health clinics know more than anybody else about this, I'm sure making an appointment or walking into a drop in session to discuss will get your questions answered. Like any sti condoms are the best protection. no cure or treatment for the actual viral infection unfortunately, just the usual range of dermatological treatments for the warts or lesions etc .. kinda typical of the UKs health services tbh.. poor at viral / immunity health problems. |

I would like to say that you have been mis-informed..
The HPV virus can cause cervical cancer, which is why they sceen for it and call women in to be checked. As it can alter cells in the body. |

It’s extremely common. A lot have it and don’t know. Only picked up during smear tests so men won’t know they have it. Your body can get rid of it over time. Women with hpv have yearly checks just in case it causes cell changes in the cervix. |

I think it's because some people think it's a STD when at most it is classed as a sti and people can be ignorant to these things.
Unfortunately am between a rock and a hard place as I don't want to say am gay or bi sexual just to get qlthe vaccine for free and other than that it's £500 to get it done privately which is money I just can't afford at the moment.
So I think I will have to wait thanks ohil |

"Is this the human pavavola virus that can give you mouth / throat cancer from oral sex on females?
Yes"
Thank you.
Remember watching a documentary about this years ago on channel 4 scarred the shit out of me. If I recall a guy that was late 20s had serious throat cancer from something he did when he was 19.
Something that's not talked about enough. |

If you believe your ex that had it show on a smear test caught it from you...then yes it is one of the high risk strains. I had an abnormal smear due to HPV, first thing I asked was...is it one of the high risk strains...to which i was told...we only bring you in for another smear (or colposcopy test) if it's one of the high risk strains. The others we don't worry about....but as many have said most people are in contact with it and don't even realise as the immune system can usually ( not always) deal with it itself. When I went for my subsequent colposcopy test, i had absolutely no abnormal cells as my body had dealt with it. Obviously it doesn't always work like that, but it isn't as you say a death sentence. Like i said i have been there |

The vaccine will only protect against strains you haven't already acquired...it wont help against any you already have...thats why they suggest you get it before you are sexually active (hence early secondary school vaccine programme) |
