The same terminology is used in both the gay scene and the BDSM scene.
In the BDSM scene, my understanding is that a "top" is someone who is dominant and a "bottom" someone who is submissive. A "switch" is someone who can be either a top or a bottom. Being topped means being dominated.
I guess it's a question of what context it is mentioned in. |

Top or bottom doesn't necessarily mean one is Dom or sub. I often bottom to tops - but Im in no way submissive to them. I just like the way we play |

"Top means Dom
Bottom means sub
Switch means alternate
You call it whatever you like if it makes you happy"
I disagree. You can 'top' someone without domming them, I know plenty of people who enjoy the pain side of play without being even slighly submissive.
I have 'bottomed' to people and I have subbed to people. They are not nessesarily the same thing at all.

But isn't that because, even within BDSM, there's a difference between S&M and D&S?
So, for example, I'm submissive but I'm not a masochist. If I'm looking for someone to top me I'm looking for a Domme. I'm not necessarily looking for someone to hurt me. |

Yeppers
It's a bit like... erm...
A ford Fiesta is a car, but a car is not nessesarily a Ford Fiesta
Does that make any sense? lol!
If I am playing with someone who makes me feel 'compliant' I don't see that as 'bottoming' it doesn't feel the same to me at all as a bloody good fun thrashing ... but maybe that's just my view of it |

I like being bottom because it feels good and I like being top because it also feels good.
It has absolutely nothing at all to do with wanting to be dom or wanting to be sub....it just feels GOOD.
I wish some people would stop attaching labels to people. |
