We spotted Miss Harper as she walked past the reception desk. Attractive and petite, and dressed in modest black heels, a long black, flowing skirt and a white tailored shirt, buttoned to the collar but just fitted enough to highlight her slim waist and pert breasts. She was carrying a red leather folder in one hand. All very business-like.
Ben walked over to greet her. ‘Miss Harper?’ he asked. She smiled and put out her hand which Ben took and shook gently. ‘Hello, I’m Ben, thanks for coming. Charlie is over in the corner, if you’d like to follow me.’
I watched them as they walked over. Miss Harper looked really sexy. Not the showy kind of sexy, but the classy, chic type.
To anyone looking it would have been clear that she and Ben had only just met; this was easy to pull off as it really was their first time. But now she and I, married for nearly twenty years, needed to give the impression we’d never met before. I stood as they approached. ‘Miss Harper, this is Charlie,’ said Ben. She smiled warmly at me as we briefly shook hands and I asked her to take a seat, indicating to the sofa facing the corner, the one with its back toward the lounge area. Ben and I sat facing her on the opposite sofa.
So far, so convincing.
The business meeting started the way all business meetings do, with small talk: ‘Did you find the place OK?’, ‘Oh, I know, the M4 can be a nightmare,’ etc., etc. The waiter arrived and loaded the table with teapot, cups and a large plate of sandwiches. He was oblivious, of course, just another boring meeting.
As he walked away, Miss Harper looked at the sandwiches and then at us and said, with a straight face, ‘Goodness, I’m going to be stuffed after this.’ I gave her one of my stern, raised eyebrows kinda looks, trying to tell her that she’s supposed to be taking this seriously. But Ben, well, he completely lost it and burst out laughing.
Once order was restored we kicked off the meeting proper. ‘So, gentlemen,’ said Miss Harper, ‘your written proposal to provide marketing services to my company was very good, but you’re up against some very big, stiff competition. Can you tell me why I should choose you over the others?’
She’d obviously decided she was going to have fun with this...
