Have you considered your mate's behaviour, is there anything about his character that makes you suspect he would be interested in an intimate relationship.
You might consider just hanging out with him and raise the topic of relationships and how men and women look at sex quite differently. See what his reaction is to that. You could say you admire the sexual freedom that some blokes have with each other without appearing overtly gay.
The bottom line is that he is a close friend and you have to consider if your sexual desire for him is worth risking what could be a life long friendship.
