They have changed the settings so you have to be invited by an admin of the group or have the code. Previously you could search the name and if there was available space you could join automatically

I think you can still join groups by searching for them and joining if there are empty spots. Example: #londonass. You don't need to be invited, anyone can join!

And there are literally thousands of groups, quite a few for London people. Mostly men though, which I don't mind given my orientation
