My girlfriend and I had moved into our new house some 6 weeks previously. A new build house-a blank canvas to make our own. The first thing we did was to have sex in every room obviously-who wouldn’t?!
On our third day there we had a knock at the back door. It was our neighbours. They had moved in just before us. John and Lisa. She was in her 40s, clearly looked after herself. A couple of weeks later and I had just finished a HIT class at my new gym. The reality of the expense of a new home had hit home and so I couldn’t afford my luxury gym anymore. This was the local council run one. It had most basic things just rougher around the edges. As I made my way to the changing rooms I made sure to do do the usual-head down, don’t look up. That week was non stop. There always seemed to be something to do in the house. Hanging pictures, painting, carpet fitting…the list was endless. Trying to do all that and work full time was exhausting. There was little time or energy for anything fun-including any be_room action. I kept telling myself it would all be worth it. On the Thursday my task was to hang the new flat screen tv on the wall. Not as straight forward as the instructions would have you believe! I took out the cardboard boxes to the bin, cursing the tv under my breath. As I folded the boxes up I heard a voice from the other side of the fence. “Thats some choice language there!” It was John next door. I laughed and told him what I was up to. He offered to come and help-he was a handyman so it would be no bother to him. I accepted his offer gratefully and he came round. He had clearly just come from work as he was in his standard working clothes, somewhat dusty and grimy. He helped to affix the brackets into the wall and we then lifted up the tv. As we lifted it I couldn’t help but notice his tshirt had ridden up expoing his hairy stomach-a happy trail leasing into the waistband of his trousers. Something stirred inside me, something unknown. A couple of days later and it was the week I had been dreading. We had booked in a building team for the house to help with the work-painters, tilers, plumbers and electricians. Trying to work from him while there were so many folk coming in and out was almost impossible. I always feel so awkward in my own house when there are tradesmen in. By the lunchtime on Wednesday I had had enough and decided I would go for a run to clear my mind.
