Martin kept on trying Graeme's phone, to no avail, so decided to head to Ellie's flat again, where, just as he was arriving, he noticed 2 masked men run out of the building, get into a waiting car and speed away.
Without hesitation Martin headed up to Ellie's flat, before pushing in through the open door.
Ellie was still on the bed, but without her shackles on, her breathing ragged and laboured, but with colour returning to her cheeks.
Two men were laying by either side of the bed, trussed like chickens with cable ties, blindfolded and gagged. Both looked to have gone 12 rounds with Mike Tyson and neither were going anywhere.
Covering Ellie with a blanket, Martin used her phone to call the Police,then, after checking that Ellie was OK, left before they arrived, to try and preserve his anonymity.
Across the city Derek was sitting in the car he had liberated from a parking lot earlier that day, his old C.O., George, in the passenger seat beside him.
"Just like old times, Sir!" Derek said, a huge smile lighting up his face.
"Absolutely Derek" his old commanding officer said. "I can't believe that it's the same woman I sat next to on the train. Fate, I guess".
"I couldn't leave her there, Sir and having you around certainly stacked the odds in my favour. Thank you"
"My pleasure, Derek. We now have to make sure no one suspects your involvement, so get back to work and I'll deal with the car and get back to you later"
With that, Derek opened the door and drifted off into the side streets, leaving George to dump the car in a quiet road, notorious for street theft and car crime, knowing that it would be gone within the hour.
