Claire kissed me.
"I have just one condition, though, on having a baby."
"What's that?" Claire looked puzzled.
" I would want it to be born before Emily starts Secondary School."
"Oh, Okay. We better start soon then."
"Well yes, oh and one more condition."
"Another one?"
"Yes, I would prefer the baby to be born into a married household."
Claire paused, "Are you proposing?"
"Erm, well, yes, I guess I am."
Claire smiled her biggest smile yet, "yes, yes, yes."
"Are you sure?"
"Very sure."
We kissed.
A couple of days later, Emily's Mum called her for a chat. This was a regular thing. When I passed the phone to Emily, she took it to her room, but the first thing I heard her say was, "Daddy's got a girlfriend."
Some minutes later, Emily came out of her room, still chatting away and said to me, "Mum wants a word with you."
Emily said goodbye to her Mum, and I was given the phone.
"Hi," I said.
"Hi. I hear you have a girlfriend."
"Yes, I do. Did Emily tell you who?"
"Yes, she did. When did this relationship start?"
"Only a month or so ago. I asked her out on the night of the school Disco. Don't worry. We weren't seeing each other when she was Emily's teacher."
"Okay. It's a bit quick to tell Emily, isn't it?"
"Not really. If you remember, I proposed to you after we had only been going out six weeks or so."
"I guess so."
"Look, firstly, it's none of your business, although I understand your concerns, but Claire and I put Emily at the forefront of all the decisions we make."
"Okay. As long as you do, then that's fine."
She was obviously jealous, although I am not sure why, as she left me in the first place.
Things got hectic after then. The following weekend Claire moved most of her clothes over to my place, and over the next three months, we gradually reorganised the house. Some of my furniture was replaced by hers, the rest was sold or thrown away, and my surplus was also disposed of.
Christmas was wonderful having Claire there as well. Some of the time, Emily was with her Mum, but whether it was the three of us or just Claire and I, it was special.
Early in the new year, we started planning our wedding for Easter.
When we told Emily, she was delighted, even more so when Claire asked her to be a Bridesmaid.
Three weeks before the wedding, Claire received confirmation that she was pregnant.
The wedding wasn't huge, about 40 people in all and we didn't tell anyone she was expecting until afterwards.
When the baby arrived, Emily was in Year 6 and 10 years old, so my target was reached.
It was a little girl, who we named Poppy.
Emily was great with her and a big help to Claire.
Within a few weeks of the baby's arrival, Claire told me she wanted another baby! I wasn't surprised.
He (Joel) arrived after Emily had started Secondary School, but not by much.
Our family was complete, and our lives moved forward. We were a happy family.
There will be more. "Claire the Teacher 10 years on" will follow in a couple of days.
Enjoy.
