Disappointed by La Macarena nr. Malaga

We've been twice to La Macarena this year, hoping to find a replacement for Spice, but found it disappointing. On the plus side the food is good and the booze is included, but we found it run down. The hot tub was cold, the pool was missing tiles and had sharp edges (Ross cut his foot) and everything looked old. Our air conditioning sprang a leak in the night and sprayed water over the apartment. When we eventually found the owner rather than an apoligy we were told off for not telling her earlier and had to do without. We left early.

While we were there we were turfed out of the pool so photos could be taken for a sales brochure, so we assume it is being run down prior to sale.

Considering it's Euro 260 per day to include food (which has to be paid in cash; one couple there said the whole thing is 'under the radar') we will probably go elsewhere, maybe try Venus Star which is actually cheaper.

Malaga SA

Sorry to hear of your disappointment, we went there the last week of last season and saw everything was looking "tired" and thought the reason for closure was for an annual refurb, obviously nothing was done, we live over the mountains in the country, just down the road is a beautiful hotel La Bobadilla its not a swinging hotel but for the same money B&B not full board it is amazing, they call it the royal retreat as the king of Spain used to stay there!! we would always prefer a really good hotel rather than a shabby swing hotel?

We'd agree... what made it worse is that the owner behaved as though she was doing us a favour letting us stay. Our opinion was that she's running out of money, hence cash payments.

As one of us (Ross) doesn't drink free booze is not so attractive.

If you have 2 million to spare you can buy it apparently.

Oh no... we are booked to go there soon, was hoping it would be nice... looks like we'll have to make use of the all inclusive drink so we don't notice!!

I don't think it's a disaster, but say 'average'. We think the owner might have been a bit grumpy and pissed off with us (we were not keen on payment in cash.... we live in Spain and they have a huge problem with tax avoidance).

Let's hope it's bought as a going concern by someone who will put money into it. In the short term, I'd pay the deposit on a credit card though.

We were there earlier in the year and it was fine though we agree the owner isn't really doing much to improve it. She has been trying to sell for a while now and told us she had a couple of interested parties, one to maintain the concept, the other not.

We always have a good time there and have booked flights already to go back next May.......if it's still open! We hope so as as has been said there are fewer and fewer alternatives out there!

We gather the whole thing is under the radar and without planning consent, hence the cash payments.... suspect it will make it very difficult to sell as a going concern.

We've recently come back from our visit and thought we'd share our thoughts.

Yes, it is tired and I cut my foot on the tiles too. If you're expecting 5* luxury, you'll be disappointed it is very 'Rustic' No top class service either. Apart from the evening meal, you have to help yourself to drinks (no bar staff) and take all your plates/cups/cutlery back into the kitchen, put waste in bins and glasses into into the bar yourselves when you've finished. Also have to tidy up sunbeds and take cushions back afterwards.... BUT we enjoyed every second there! Having to keep it tidy yourselves made it feel like you were sharing a large Villa with friends.

Everyone got to know each other very quickly and although people were coming and going at different times, you still felt like one big family.

Never more than 2 pairs of the same nationality at the same time when we were there which gave it a lovey diverse feeling.

The owner Biny joined the guests for cocktails and the evening meal, which was a nice personal touch.

After dinner each night, the guests retired to the bar/ playrooms for dancing, flirting and lots of playing!

We just hope it is still open next year, as we would love to go again.

It is horses for courses of course and not every one will like it... but we did, immensely!
