We love Benidorm but in small doses.
I (Mr) first went there with my parents in 1969 and regularly during the 70's so I have seen a lot of changes over the years. I can actually remember when most of Levante promenade was private houses and what is now the top end of the square (up from the Hotel Orange) was a dirt track and the venue for Benidorm market.
Nowadays it has got a bit of a down market reputation, some of it deserved, some not. To be fair the TV series didn't do it any favours, it was pretty much a caricature of the place. Funny at times though.
We like to stay in old town and spend most of our time there. It has some very nice restaurants and tapas bars. But we do venture into Levante as well.
Mrs likes the Heartbreak bar on the promenade and we've seen some very good tribute acts (Meatloaf and Pink last time)
OK it does attract a lot of the "Brits on the piss" gang and it doesn't get the nickname "Bellydorm" for nothing, but it's still a great place for a few days of blowout.
But as I said at the beginning, only in small doses.

As a couple we are looking forward to our visit, only previous outing were 2 boys beanos but it does look like it can offer more than that. Did venture into the old town and that drove the wish to come back and explore properly.
Will find out in a couple of weeks!

We like lunchtime tapas bar crawls in old town. Start in La Cava Aragonesa then go through the arcade to the last one on the right. Then out into "tapas alley" and stop in a couple of others.
A couple of tapas and a glass of wine in each one and you are ready for siesta.
The clientele are mostly Spanish but a few Brits seem to have found the place. Just a pity so many miss it.
If you hire a car and want to explore further afield you could do the mountain village at Guadalest and the waterfalls at El Algar. They are quite close to each other so you can do both in a day.
If you are into wine you could do the tour and tasting at Enrique Mendoza. It's only just outside Benidorm at Alfaz del Pi and one of Spain's best kept wine secrets. Most hotels have their flyer in the reception. |

We love our short stays.
Couldn't do the place as a holiday for a few weeks but the old town area is brilliant, tapas and bars.
We tried a few days in Benidorm with a few in Altea and then a few in Alicante old town before jumping the plane home.
Will give Denia a whirl, went for a day trip, really nice.
I think Benidorm is best seen as the sum of its parts but like everything else, give it a go |

I went for the 1st time beginning of October, had a great time, yes there is Brits on the piss but there's so much more than that in Benidorm. I'm going to Torrevieja next march & I'll definitely venture back into Benidorm |

The Comedians we saw, Tony Scott, Albi Senior, Danny Downing (other comedian's are available!) were hilarious, up there with the funniest we've seen. We had a few drinks while watching them, we must be the Brits on the piss! (Funny enough everywhere we've been on holiday people drink alcohol). We were back at our hotel by 11pm though so we missed all the late night shenanigans |

"Its ok once in a while see how the other half live, a cheap and cheerful holiday lol.
I'm there 2nd November till the 9th
What do you mean by “the other half”? "
I think they are referring to those working class type chappies.
Common people, ladies who don't wear hats or gentlemen who wear shorts at dinner.
Obviously not people like you or I as we are very, very posh. |
