Holidaymakers PDI- cash or card
Jump to: Newest in thread
In PDI next week, first holiday abroad in almost 3 years and post covid. Random question, better to bring cash, or is it now a thing of the past post covid as with most places in the UK, card only? Would prefer cash as easier to manage spend and no charges but whats it like on the ground? X |

I can't think of anywhere that doesn't accept cash except the sunbeds on the beach
Most clubs prefer cash but every other shop restaurant bus etc card |

I was there a couple of weeks ago, used cash all the time, it seemed much more common for people to use cash than in UK. My bank/card has a habit of charging foreign currency transaction fees so I avoided all those too. |

We use a post office pre paid Travel card .
Its a Mastercard debit that you pre load with euros before you go.
You can check the balance or top up using the app , or freeze it if you misplace it.
It’s easy and quick to apply for and the app is straight forward.
We take cash as well for the taxis , tips and bars that prefer cash.
It’s nice to have both options. |

Yes… as I said it’s a credit card…. But like all credit cards as long as you pay it off then there is no charge. Credit cards offer greater protections than debit cards. |

Just to add to the above comments. Most banks charge per ‘foreign currency’ transaction on debit cards, so this can mount up. We used to use a pre loaded currency card but their exchange rates and cash transaction fees were quite poor. We now use a credit card abroad and pay it off in full when the statement comes through. That way we don’t get the ‘per transaction’ fee and the exchange rates aren’t at the tourist rate.
Also take cash for taxis, tips etc and also any bars/clubs where we’d prefer the name not to appear on the cc statement!! |

Revolut card. Perfect for travelling, different currencies etc.
We tend to pay with card in restaurants etc, but always carry some cash. Nobody needs to be tipping their waiter/favourite barman by card. |
