I did read on one site that the Province of Alicante is trying to get the 90/180 rule relaxed and are working with the UK government on it. How true that is and how much success they'll have is another question! |

I've heard that story a couple of times. True or false? I've no idea.
However I really don't see how Alicante province could deal directly with the UK on this. There are too many other layers of government.
Firstly Alicante is only one of three provinces in Valencia region so they would be involved. Next would be the Spanish government, but ultimately it would be the EU that would decide.
Spain (including Alicante) is part of the Schengen area and the ramifications of allowing one small province to negotiate a separate deal would affect the whole area.
I don't see it ever happening. |

"It would be great if the UK could become part of the European community so we could travel and work freely.
Oh. .. wait ..."
I’ll be getting my Irish passport soon.
Shame Jack Charlton is no longer alive. He could get anyone an Irish passport. Even from Timbuktu. |

Yes i read that too they realise how much money they are losing but im not sure they can do it independently as they are in the Schengen area countries outside the Schengen can i think.

Hi everyone, I live in Alicante and what has happened is that the Valencia politicians have asked the Spanish government to not require a visa, or make it easier to get one.
It seems there will be no success, at least now. And as it has been said here, it has to be a Spanish government decision, not EU, not Alicante. |

Of course the EU will have the final say.
Or did Boris tell lies about the UK not having control of our own borders whilst part of the EU ? |

"The 90/180 day issue can be resolved with individual countries. Does not have to be run past the whole of Schengen or the EU."
Nope, the rule is for all visitors to countries in the Schengen area, it's an EU rule and individual countries can not negotiate their own rules.
Note, the 90/180 rule does only apply to Schengen so any EU countries outside that are not counted as part of the entitlement.

UK citizens will not need a visa to enter Spain, just the ETIAS which is like the U.S. Esta system. €7 and will last for 3 years from what I have read although the roll out may be delayed |

Actually, they can. Each country's got the option to extend the length of stay beyond that mandated by the Brexit agreement. But it will only apply to the country that's offering the extended stay, not the entire Schengen region. |

Thanks JustH. I despair of people touting rubbish on here, clearly not understanding the various issues surrounding 90/180.
Individual countries can ( and will ) make their own decisions on visas, longer stays etc. We are at last seeing some signs of action in Spain where we have a home. |

Agree
pretty damn silly rule change if you can fly into a region of spain ...drive to france with no further check...return to spain 120 days later then fly out from spain.
I am sure the french would love it. |

You wouldn't expect to go to, say, America, Canada, Japan, Singapore, India etc etc and just be allowed to stay permanently. And why should you?
The only way you could justify such an arrangement would be to abolish all borders and controls on international movement...and that would lead to chaos and collapse |
