Today there were two tourists and them Germans were calling them "fresh meat" (but in a nice joking way). It's a bit like groundhog day, the same people in the same spots. Because there are no loungers people use rocks to hold down their linen and so they return then next day and they are still there. Still waiting for a day when someone says "excuse me that's my spot" or "you're using my stone".  | |||

There is 800,000 vaccines due in from next week till July. It’s always the same words. 70% of the island vaccinated for full tourism. Depending on what is said from the Uk. We could be looking at 30/40% of 2019 tourists in May. 50% in June & July. August and as we head to winter season 60%. Then October to March could well see record numbers. "What is the situation re the Astra Zeneca jab there ? Are people willing to be vaccinated with it ? Sadly if they are not it, I suspect the hoped for dates will not be met. 17 million + AZ jabs so far given here in the Uk, with no problems and great results infection prevention wise. The other vaccines will not be available in sufficient quantities until at least the autumn." The Spanish government have got their hands on a lot of the Pfizer Vaccine and are expecting the Janssen vaccine too. The Janssen vaccine is a single dose vaccine which has obvious advantages. Covid-19 in GC is very much a Las Palmas thing. We have over 1400 infections in the Las Palmas municipality (north) and last time I looked 38 known infections in San Bartolome de Tirajana (South) and some of those are illegal immigrants. When you look at the situation of holidaymakers coming in, you have a case of a low infection rate population being diluted by a population of people who have been vaccinated and/or tested. It isn't the catastrophe waiting to happen that some people are making it out to be. Yes our leaders are putting out a lot of PR to make the Canaries known to be a safe place to visit, but the fact remains this part of the island has kept a good record of social distancing discipline and our figures refect that. The main problem here has been getting our hands on any vaccine, but that situation is one that is improving. The lifeblood of the Canaries is tourism and it's something the Canarian Government takes very seriously. The police have a no nonsense stance and we are going into strict rules for Easter to protect our visitors as much as possible when they arrive in May. Can't wait to see you guys again! | |||

As an outsider in the UK I am relying on various different media channels for my info and I am definitely getting very positive feelings about the attitude and the focus of the Canarian President, Health Minister and Tourism Minister. This seems to be far more ambitious and creative than the government in mainland Spain. I hope my Eden friends agree... | |||

Give us the vaccine and we'll do our level best to make our beautiful Island as safe for our visitors as possible. As I mentioned earlier ERTE comes to an end in May and we don't have the social housing benefits that are in places like the UK. So if the government doesn't do something urgently a lot of people will end up on the streets. The joke here is that if you get kicked out of your home you find a dinghy and row into Arguineguin and you get put up in a hotel (sorry Canarian humour - just a joke). Spanish news is full of we just bought millions of this and millions of that but buying it and having it delivered are two different things. Personally I was at a shipping warehouse today and was shown a stockpile contacting millions of pounds worth of medical equipment (not Covid related - just normal equipment purchased from the UK) standing there since January because of Brexit. | |||

On a side note: We have the jet2 manager who comes in now and then for bingo lol Bookings are poor in May (but still way more bookings than last year) June & July so so. But august bookings are looking really good. So is the rest of the year. We just need to see what the Uk government say on the 5th to see what’s happening. I’m way more hopeful than I was even a week ago! | |||

Yes, I think they do. It will be good when they can open again, it creates a bit more atmosphere. The beds don't bother us, we just chuck towels down, with said rocks on and buy an umbrella and hope that the Calima doesn't carry it off! "This is true. We've had a windy time of late and those wind shields are missed more than the loungers I think. They do sell a chair very similar to a camping chair but it folds flat. They are light and ideal for tanning on. | |||

Yes, I think they do. It will be good when they can open again, it creates a bit more atmosphere. The beds don't bother us, we just chuck towels down, with said rocks on and buy an umbrella and hope that the Calima doesn't carry it off!

Add to that, that there is already talk of booster vaccinations being required by Autumn/Winter, so, unfortunately, there still is no clear and definite path out of things. Things are headed in the right direction, no doubting that but there are still risks and more importantly, there are still people at risk.....so the balance is holidays vs those still at risk.
