Negative test REQUIRED
Jump to: Newest in thread
Just saw this on my news feed
The Central Government made an agreement yesterday with the regional governments of the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, for a protocol to establish safe corridors for tourists with European countries that allow the mobility of travellers, in order to reactivate tourism in the two archipelagos "without putting public health at risk."
The protocol establishes that all travellers arriving in the Canary or Balearic Islands from a territory with a cumulative incidence greater than 50 per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, will have to present a negative test for the diagnosis of active infection carried out a maximum of 48 hours before the flight. |

We've seen the same on a FB page. It's a bit unclear though as we presume you'll have to pay for your own outbound COVID Test which we believe is in the region of £200. per person? Of course it doesn't negate the need to quarantine for 14 days on your return to the UK. Maybe that start of some positive news, but we won't be holding our breaths for travel to the Canaries this year. |

We have seen this as well - we were tested a couple of weeks ado via NHS - could book and attend same day which is great. The problem here is the time taken to actually receive the test results as it can take upto 72 hours and possibly longer ... Can understand the max 48 hours before you travel - but what happens if you dont get the results before you intend to fly... |

Th nhs isn't appropriate, you need a private test and a certificate |

Agree the NHS isn't there for you just to have a test to travel. No wonder the system is creaking if people are misusing it.
You can get a private test for £100 |

So just now the islands government have agreed to cover the costs of testing for inbound flights. Now the Uk government have set up a task team to look at how to restart air travel. So until then no one has a clue what the costs are. But the agreement from here is for testing to be free |

£200 ish each so maybe near £800 for a family. Tourism is finished if that's the case |

I read this yesterday, I’m due to fly to Tenerife on Wednesday. If it’s the same story that the Sun was running there doesn’t seem to be any real substance to the testing before you go out there. Apart from the banner headlines it never really mentions that again. Typical Sun click bait I reckon. |

It’s due to be signed off by Tuesday. It was fully agreed on Friday night.
So if you test positive returning home from here, you have 14 day quarantine on the islands. Put up in a 5* hotel. Now the reason why I keep saying but the cost of testing in the Uk. The News over here keep saying the Uk government are close to agreeing an air bridge to both sets of islands. That works for everyone.
Now late last night Germany have agreed to fund the cost of testing for the Germans. Now that frees up cash for the islands. |

Before leaving the islands, all travelers must also take a diagnostic test for active infection 48 hours before the flight. These tests will be carried out in dependencies assigned by the competent health authorities, at no cost to the tourist. If you test positive, you will not be able to fly and will have to quarantine at the same destination. |

"Thanks. Will you still need to quarantine in UK ?"
As things stand at the moment then yes you will. I’ve seen nothing in the British press about this, so until the Govt. confirm agreement then I won’t be booking a holiday. The devil is in the detail. |

Arggg! I too have a million questions about this, but I’m sure it’ll all become clearer in time.
What if one of you tests positive and the other negative and has to fly home leaving partner there for two weeks!!....I’d be gutted! Lol x |

If this is signed off I presume that having done the quarantine on the island you wouldn’t have to do so at home as you already served the quarantine period and I presume you will be re tested before being able to fly out. |

I'm a bit unsure, I understand it's been signed off there, but it's not clear what the UK standing on it is, I can't find any info, at the moment, I would presume it would be on the FCO site... |

I did.... but there wasn't a requirement for a test on return when I left. Just seems daft that you have to quarantine if you get the all clear, although I suppose anyone could pick up COVID in the 48 hours between having their test and setting foot on the plane |

Yep, that’s why the idea falls down in our eyes. Appreciate that the Canaries are desperate to get tourists back but with the mainland Spain rate so massive and mainland Spain can still travel to the Canaries we’d be surprised if the UK Govt lifted the quarantine restrictions this year. |

As I’ve already said you most probably would have to retest and you wouldn’t be able to leave the island until you have completed quarantine and had the all clear.
But as I say nothing is concrete yet especially on the UK side of things. X |

The Cabildo de Tenerife is looking for alternatives to re-establish flights and the tourist flow from Germany to Tenerife as soon as possible, which last year represented more than half a million visitors, reported its President, Pedro Martín.
This was one of the talking points during a meeting between Martín and the minister and director of the economic area of ??the German Embassy in Spain, Cristoph Wolfrum, accompanied by the consul on the island Ángel Hernández, with the intention of exchanging ideas on the evolution processes of the pandemic, and how these affect the island's economy, mainly the tourism sector.
In this regard, Martín says in a statement that the Tenerife Cabildo maintains a weekly communication with the German embassy, ??transmits information about the situation of Covid on the island, and the meeting with the minister of the embassy has been held to further consolidate these communication channels.
“The minister of the German embassy has told us that they have no problem in testing people when coming home from the islands for free, upon their arrival in Germany, so it would not be necessary to implement this control system here in Tenerife, and would allow us to generate a sense of security for anyone who comes from destinations such as Tenerife or the other Canary Islands,” said the president, adding that “If we manage to maintain and continue to lower our incidence rates, it would no longer even be necessary to do any kind of test for those who come from Germany anyway." |

After the 14 day quarantine will they retest you 48 hours before flight again ? If still positive are you then back into quarantine.
This seems to be the case of 3 young men in Italy, cant get home as keep testing positive , and they have been stuck in quarantine for 8 or 9 weeks. |

14 days quarantine on return to UK.
2 days to get P45 in post.

Okay so the plan is if you do the 14 days here. You would not need to do 14 days back in the Uk.
It’s all up in the air just now. The ground work is in Place for the EU. But no one really knows what’s happening with the Uk. |

My daughter and partner paid £140 each for theirs as couldn't get test on NHS due to high demand. They had to do it as had symptoms and been on contact with someone who tested positive. Took them a week to get results although promised 24 hours. It's a joke and these companies making money out of a sad situation. |

Well you are asking someone to stay on one island instead of another where the infection rate is up to 16 times less.
So yes. It might. |

So what you are saying is that UK is pristine with no Covid-19 at all and the Canaries are riddled with it? You're saying I've got no chance of getting it on a crowded bus but don't stand a chance on a 200 seater plane with 20 people on it?
Your heart is in the right place but you're pointing in the wrong direction for culprits. |

Another awesome day on the island. Drove inland and enjoyed the breathtaking scenery of the mountains. Then down to Puerto Rico and along the 500 to take in the glorious sea views. I take your opinion on board, but will it stop me travelling on Wednesday? No it won’t. Are you as critical of people like myself whilst at home who stand more chance of contracting it in my day to day job here than on holiday? If you’re that concerned though drop me a PM with your address and I’ll send you a postcard. |

As long as people are prepared to follow the current FCO guidelines and quarantine when they return to the UK then travel if you want to. If you ignore the guidelines then you’re just being selfish. Really wish our employers would allow us to take an additional 14 days on top of our annual leave. |

This thread is not correct,,check out all UK government sites , no mention of the covid Or having to quantine test before going or on return. Or having to have a return test before flying back. Also nothing about it on Tui sites. ..? |

I've seen nothing as yet, from a post above, it is due to be rubber stamped today, but the UK obviously have to agree to it. I think 14 day quarantine will still be in place for the foreseeable future |

The main Issue isn’t wether you have to quarantine or you have to have a test. The BIG issue is that the UK government and a the people that think this whole COVID thing is a game. The government need to get strict and need to start looking at the way the country’s with the lower infection rates are doing it...
We have been here over a week and we have only seen ONE person not wearing a mask in public and that person was a Brit!
The other night we were sat in a bar where at home you don’t a mask the police arrived and told everyone to replace our masks and to pull them down when you want a drink or to eat and everyone quite happily did so.
That is the problem people at home are to precious and entitled... Its against our civil liberties to wear a mask ? Bullshit people need to stop thinking about themselves and think about the greater good of the country.
Just wear a mask every wear you go that way the bars can open and the economy can open and maybe we can avoid another Great Depression and another full Lockdown. It’s that simple.
Ps having a great holiday enjoying the sun and the great company out here |

"Has anyone heard if this is official ?
It must be official as the title of this thread has REQUIRED in capitals. "
On this site that means hee haw, just means they were shouting.
If it was that official at the time of the original post then there would be a starting date. |

"We are supposed to travel on Tuesday.
Or not.
Who knows. It all depends on when it comes in and when we can get a test.
All we have are flights so it may just be very last minute.
"
That is the problem, getting a test, but more so, how long you wait for the results... |

This could be the problem we have.
Travel on a tuesday would require a test on the Sunday (within 48hrs of travel)
Finding a place that is open to test on a Sunday may be an issue.
Remember that the NHS one is not what you need and you won't get results in time anyway.
Private tests that are time stamped etc cost between £125/150 but as said, a tuesday flight may be near impossible.
With luck you may get away before it comes into practice ?
We are 3 wks away so not looking too good |

"Yes, not very clear, do travellers go and get tested before they travel, what happens if they get there and they haven't been tested..."
I called jet2 ... No comment
I called back and asked about cypress they said you need a privet test appointment two days before flying
I called a private company who want £195 each and will do it at weekends, they promise a 24 hour turnaround but won't guarantee it and they want money up front
I called our insurance they said if we test positive they will pay out but they won't cover us if the rest result is delayed.
Phoned jet2 again they said that cypress is no test - no fly - no refund and no change of flights within 48 hours of departure
As I had pushed back paying our balance (deposit paid in February) and it's due tomorrow and we are supposed to fly in 6 weeks I cancelled amd lost the deposit as it's too risky to lose the lot.
As it happens I could probably rebook for less now anyway but will hold off for a few weeks
I called back jet2 and asked about Madeira and there you get tested for free on arrival, stay in your hotel for 24 hours and get your result next day.
Id accept the risk of infection due to flying a few weeks ago but not now too many positive people
I could have paid the balance and we would have had a full refund if quarantine is still on but this new revelation adds even more risk for refunds.
I hope it doesn't kill the island |

Yes its not looking good.
at least there is a better chance to get to Cyprus as they are 72hrs before.
48hrs is a killer. We have phoned a few in Scotland and the bottom line is that flying on a Mon/Tues/Wed is a no no as they do not test at weekends
A test on Mon does not get sent to lab until 5.00pm with results by 5.00pm on the Wed so unless flight is in evening it is a risk. |

According to www.spain .info the official tourist website the requirement for entry from Europe to canaries is to download SpTH (Spain Travel Health) app and fill out details of ID and location your staying at . You will receive QR code which must be shown on arrival and temp will be checked . No mention of requirement for neg test results . Hope this helps |

Yet !!!
It's in the press stated that it's been approved by the local government of the islands so nothing to do with mainland Spain. |

It looks like there is going to some form of the testing and reduced quarantine coming in but no details as to when according to daily mail and other newspapers I’ll post the link if that’s ok ?
Or check out the mail online

This is certainly a step forward if it happens for coming back to UK, but is of no help whatsoever for people trying to get there as it is stated in the OP |

To be fair I think the canarians will do absolutely anything to get tourists back, they will probably offer free testing on arrival eventually but as to the UK government going along with it, I don't think it will be this year now. |

I guess the problem will be that the Canaries are part of Spain. Not sure what the rates are in Spain at the moment |

The Madrid government have specifically rejected any idea of travellers from the peninsular requiring testing. The only restriction is if your home region is locked down (state of alarm or judicial agreement) you can't travel out of it to go on holiday.
Yes the Canaries asked for it but it was flatly rejected.
We're going back to Fuerteventura from Catalonia tomorrow.... |

I don't think it's an obsession, people want a holiday and we don't know when the hassle will be gone. There are reports of only 20 of 30 on a plane and they are very strict with enforcing the rules in the canaries, which is what we should be doing here |

Having read a lot of the above as a 20year Canary resident can I put a few things straight. Firstly day to day things change so check before you leave.
I left Birmingham Airport on Monday, Ryanair flight cost 15.99€
Airport was superb no hassle with check in and security, plenty of space between people. Through to departures cafe's etc almost empty so again no hassle getting a drink sandwich. Aircraft including myself 27 people so social distancing at its best. Three seats so laid out and slept for two hours. On landing on Lanzarote. Passport control non existent, QR paper printed and a young lady scanned paper, another young lady with a temperature checker passed me by. From exit of aircraft to carpark my wife said 6 minutes, so no drama. Safety, the filter systems on the modern day aircraft are second to none, stop worrying. QR document is easy to get via website and can only be completed 48 hours from your 'arrival' time. Print it as a number of people did have problems with the QR on their phones.
My wife flew back a week earlier than me and got 8.99€ deal with Ryanair, similar numbers on the aircraft 34 in total. Friend from Gatwick Saturday 45 people on her flight. If you can put up with the quarantine then come over, you have more chance getting this virus on your return to UK.
Why are we obsessed with Canaries the virus has been almost non existent over here. Today at 15.25 the temperature is 32c in the shade. Ok the islands are dead in tourist numbers but if you want a quiet, sunny warm holiday the Canaries are the place to be. |

"Have you read anywhere when the neg test comes into force ?
Nothing concrete and it might be a long time before uk takes the islands off the quarantine list."
We work from home so the Quarantine won't concern us too much. Problem for us is if we need a Neg covid test before going.
As i stated previously it is the 48hr window that is the issue |

Have heard from Fuerteventura contact today that AENA have reluctantly agreed to do Covid testing on arrival in Fuerte. Word is that it will start around the beginning of November. Until then it's the Q Code thing and temperature check/visual inspection as has been for a while.
Our worry is a lockdown meaning we can't even get from home to a UK airport! |

Personally we have no issues visiting the Islands and believe it is safer there than certain areas of the UK.
We live in Cornwall so our problem is getting flights. Bristol has more to offer but it's a trek for us and costs mount up.
We usually fly from Exeter with TUI, November we are due to fly but with the hotel closed and them not flying this month we are not very hopeful.
A nice holiday in the sun would be wonderful, we're not hardened swingers so the focus is not for us to go to the bars and clubs every night, it's just an added bonus when we fancy a mmf lol.
We have made a few friends out in GC so very sad that we can't see them and explore our favourite island. Fingers crossed our January holiday will go ahead.

We confirmed with the hotel that our flights are still going ahead.
Checked in with Ryanair and filled in the forms but didn’t see anything about a test, other than confirming health 48 hours before. I didn’t see anything about a test unless I overlooked it.
Fingers crossed all goes to plan.
Our obsession with Gran Canaria. Canary potatoes in mojo sauce and trees. Need our annual fix. |

Recent research by the global airline body Iata that showed there had been only 44 confirmed cases of aircraft passengers contracting Covid-19 onboard, including in the period before wearing face masks was mandatory.
That’s one in 27 million, and mostly before people wore face masks. |
