There is a few things:

First off if you don’t have a BC and a kitchen you can’t open.

80% of infections all came from Las Palmas in 3 night clubs. 90+% are from people under 30.

The reason why the bars are closed (wrongfully) is to stop young people from going to one place and dancing, singing and kissing. They have come down hard so that they can get everything back to normal by the end of September. If GC can’t get everything back on track for October, there will not be many bars, restaurants or even hotels left.

Most places make 80% of their money from October to March. In fact probably 30% of bars and restaurants don’t even open from March till October

We were due to travel next Thursday. Had text from LoveHolidays stating:

The government advises against all but essential travel to your destination. Please see the government website and our FAQs for more information. If you no longer wish to travel, you can cancel your booking and we will follow up via email to give you the options to amend your booking, request a cash refund or take a refund credit note. Please note, flight change options and refunds for flight cancellations will be subject to individual airline policies over which we have no control. Please reply by 4pm on the 26th of August (Wednesday) with YES if you still wish to travel. Reply with NO if you no longer wish to travel and would like us to cancel your booking and enable your cancellation options in Manage My Booking. If we do not hear from you, we will assume you still intend to travel. The loveholidays team

I confirmed I’d like to cancel as just not possible to take the time to quarantine.

I then received a further text with a link through to Manage my Booking.

Once logged in a further option was there to cancel and take vouchers including a £25 ‘bonus’, or get a full refund which can be 8 weeks with further time for the refund from Ryanair.

They are working through them in departure date order so, with the 27th some time away, you may have to wait a little for your options to be processed.

I’ve been quite happy with the way LH has handled this tbh.

"we r still going on 3 sep spoke to jet2 yesterday 2 weeks in the sun dosent look like I have to get any 1 to water my plants at home "

I spoke to a jet2 rep yesterday, she's been brainwashed into saying the government will lift restrictions on the 30th August and the canaries have very low infection so all flights are back on.

Sorry, but they just brought in more restrictions this week due to a surge in cases and I don't *think* the government will make an exception this week

I'm optimistic, and personally I'd go to PDI tomorrow but filling people with hope then cancelling 2 days before the flight just pisses them off

I'd say the chances of the UK government making an exception for the Canaries is very low.

The headline in Canarias7:

"The Canary Islands adds as many infections in August as between February and July and reaches 5,235 cases"

&

"Most of the new infections have been registered in Gran Canaria, which this month has added 1,810 cases , about 70% of the infections registered in the archipelago in August."

The 7 day rate is greater than 65 per 100,000 for the archipelago (rtve)

It don’t really give the true picture but, just about all the cases are in Las Palmas, just about all young. LP have been put into a lockdown by themselves now. Cases will rise for an other few days then they will drop very quickly

Unfortunately the UK gov looks at overall figures. From their point of view justifying an exception to the islands is difficult enough. A town by town (or island by island) exception would be unworkable.

Until the peninsular and islands are down to the c. 20/100,000 government figure it is likely the quarantine will remain and, presumably, the FCO advice too.

We're due to come over from BCN soon and are keeping a close eye on numbers...

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

I know that, but it’s still a fact the numbers all come from LP and all come from 3 clubs only. The numbers will drop off very quickly by next week.

"Ryanair wouldn't cancel, they only care about profit not people "

I didn't realise easyJet cancelled their flights because they care about people.

BA must really care about people and not profit because whenever there is a crisis (Thomas Cook going under, holiday destinations needing quarantine etc) they screw the daylights out of people who are already down on their luck.

We don't fly out till November, our friends should be going next week.

Booked their flight and hotel seperate last December.

They want to move it till things improve

Hotel happy to move booking, Ryan air said no, their flight is still flying so they must fly out or loose the flight and no refund.

Ryan air wont talk to them but keep sending texts to download boarding pass.

It doesn't seem fair

TUI has cancelled all flights through to 24th September.

However, the owner of the villa we are renting has taken payment from my account and has emailed me to say that the number of infections has dropped right down, so it's all looking very positive.

I don't see the place being deserted as a bad sign. It shows people are taking lockdown seriously and the stats will improve as they have in the past.

From the Canarian Weekly:

"infections are starting to show a decrease; on Saturday in a small way, only 4.4%, going from 382 to 365 new cases; 314 infections were registered on Sunday almost 14% less than the day before; While on Monday, 215 infections were recorded, which represents a decrease of 31.5%.

In other words, the curve seems to have started to bend, a trend that will only be confirmed over the coming days"

Reading the Canarian Weekly is an eye opener. They are so on top of their game compared to us. They track and trace every case and give exact numbers of outbreaks. They know the numbers from one day to the next while our data is sometimes a week behind.

Sometimes it feels like other countries have technology that we don't.

Apparently they are doing heat checks. Personally I'd be happy to get swabbed in the airport and quarantine until I hot the results back if it protected the locals.

Apparently there is a test that gives results in 90 minutes. Why for the love of God are these not in every airport across the globe!

Not sure where you seen 2021. fact is no one knows when it can open.

Or next review is the 18th. Infections are down 50% from the weekend. Discharges are up by 20%.

It’s not hard to do the maths. If it stays like this and keeps getting better there is no way they will keep everything closed.

Sorry to the guy who came to the bar today. We will be back open tomorrow and all weekend.

Football is back!

Agreed, they need to get rapid testing sorted and quick.

I'd say the canaries have the ultimate motivation in trying to save thousands of businesses by getting the winter season on track and no doubt they will do whatever they can.

Let's hope they get the support of other governmens by allowing tourists to travel there once they get the cases down and tests sorted

Very important news for tourism in the Canaries. Spanish government has accepted to do covid test to all tourists arriving and leaving the Islands so they dont have to quarentinne when they are back in their countries if the test is negative.

At last what we have been hearing about for the past 2 weeks

"Very important news for tourism in the Canaries. Spanish government has accepted to do covid test to all tourists arriving and leaving the Islands so they dont have to quarentinne when they are back in their countries if the test is negative.

At last what we have been hearing about for the past 2 weeks

Yes and hopefully it will become standard practice and accepted everywhere"

Exactly. In my view all international travel should have been halted until this was in place. Trust the Canarians to lead the way on this!

Hats of to you guys!

By the way we both litterally did a happy dance when we got this news!!! Not because of the quarantine on return but because it makes our flights less likely to be cancelled.

No one really knows just now. But it has to be in within the next 3 weeks. In time for winter season. Our friend has told us it will be in by place for the start of October. So you’re looking about 3 weeks time

Which year?

As I understand it, AENA have yet to agree to this - though they'll probably do what they're told to. There's an inter-governmental meeting on the 28th. There then needs to be agreement on standards, notifications. etc., between countries.

Are the Canaries going to pay for both tests, or just the arrival?

I'm much more hopeful the 7 day numbers will come down in some of the islands to 50 DE(20 UK)/100,000 in time for a November season reboot.

I'm not being negative, just realistic. We fly to Fuerteventura next Tuesday, albeit from BCN, and expect a quiet time.

Good luck for your holiday

A good regional periodical is the Canarian Weekly which has been cautiously optimistic of late.

I think if anyone can pull this off it's the Canarians. Tourism is their lifeblood.

Yes, we have many friends in Fuerteventura, and a few in GC, who are reliant on tourism. So far, not good.

It is a real shame that things appeared to go pear shaped at the end of August...

We desperately want things to open up. Otherwise we'll be alone on the beach practicing VERY safe sex!!

The government to part fund and the airline to fund the rest. This is something that has been on the cards for sometime. It’s now been giving the green light. Also the Uk government have been in the Loop the whole time. From the tourism minister on Monday she said the air bridge is now round the corner (her words not mine)

All to late for us unfortunately our holiday has been cancelled and we will not be rebooking this year. Will just book for this time next year and hope there is something left of the GC tourist economy.

Currently the situation over here is that they calling the residents by areas and doing rapid test by zones ... let’s hope that the situation improves a bit here. Some friends told me that Maspalomas and Mogán it looks like a ghost town, it’s really a pity

Quite a bold statement to make with no great thought. I would imagine it’s down to how people manage themselves is what is key. This rings true in wherever you are in the Covid world.

There is risk when you go to the supermarket, hence minimise risk where possible (e.g don’t go three times a week, go once a week, and you’ve minimised, not eradicated the risk).

And fun is open to interpretation. Some people may just want to enjoy a holiday to walk, relax and unwind.

To relate this to ourselves. We love a good party. Our holidays are usually full on. The typical “i need a holiday, to get over that holiday” type.

However, we appreciate that it’s not the time and place and environment to currently have our typical holiday.

We went to a quiet country cabin in Torquay with our family bubble in August. It was so far away from our norm, but it was a much needed, quieter break where we did things that we typically would never do. Nights in, fishing, walking in the woods and we had the best and safest time ever under the circumstances. We didn’t go to the pubs and everything we did was in our or our family cabin.

We have taken a punt at rebooking our PDI holiday for Oct/Nov, though appreciate That closer to the time, this may be reconsidered or cancelled. If we do get there, then it’s highly likely that it’s not going to be our usual holiday in PDI.

Nevertheless, we have made a calculated decision that between 14 days at home in the cold, or 14 days in the sun, eating al fresco, be it in a restaurant or our terrace under lockdown is something we are prepared to do.

14 days of relaxation in the warmth, whilst adhering to our normal programme and approach of minimising risk, whilst getting a balance of enjoyment, be that a meal in the outdoors, a game of golf, or sunbathing and walking in a ghost town is a decision we have taken after consideration.

I would like to think we are not deluded, we are aware of the situation. We are not playing Russian Roulette anymore that what we do currently, and definitely prefer to smell fresh Spanish coffee, rather than some instant branded product out of our kitchen.

If you’re clever enough to realise whatever that is, then you should also be clever enough to realise and acknowledge this is down to the individual and their prerogative.

I’m sure we should respect people’s decisions if they choose to take a holiday in the current climate. I’m sure the majority have thought this through.

So I assume that you are locked in the house and never leave. Going by that statement every time you leave the house you are playing Russian Roulette.

We have worked constantly throughout this pandemic we want a break. We have now book hotels in the UK ironically in areas that have a higher rate of COVID than GC. What makes the things we are doing in the UK safer than those abroad. I would say we are now more at risk than if we had gone on holiday as due to the crap weather we will be eating inside etc whereas in the Canaries we would have been outside a lot of the time.

Normandy France

We have been to Mallorca 3 times in the past 2 months and believe me the locals seem to have a far better attitude to the covid problems than the Brits (at home or away in the few places still open to them) Everyone wears a mask whist going about their day to day activities (shopping, transportation, walking down the street etc.) without any complaints (ie "I have panic attacks, I have a cold, I'm not doing what the government wants" ) The staff in bars and restaurants sterilise the tables before anyone is allowed to sit, all this is done with socially distancing rules in mind, and with very few people travelling it's probably one of the safest times to go. You can still enjoy the beach, bars and restaurant to a certain extent and you help the local economy at least tick over so there will still be place to go when this is all back to normal...

In the meantime, we’re going to find a dodgy area with an underground orgy and have bareback sex with a number of people we have never met. Now that’s a proper game of Russian Roulette.

Joking aside, I wasn’t going to mention it, but I have read some of the past posts of this gentleman, and only a few days ago was talking about meeting up with people, obviously people you do not know or have any history of.

Hmm, two words that spring to mind- sanctimonious and hypocrisy.
