I think sometimes people make to big an issue when it comes to race and in other instances not enough of an issue in regards to racism.

Thanks for this. Regards the novelty aspect, there are subtleties and contextual issues which are hardwired into middle aged black men like my hubby due to their experiences of a predominantly white society.
He's absolutely not a racial militant but is conscious and has been affected by discreet racism that has followed him around for all his 50+ years-this isn't a trivial point and most black people don't complain, they just get on with their lives. White people, inc myself will never fully understand that.
