Have just spoken with someone who was involved in the printing of "Oor Wullie" for many years with DC Thomson's.
He has reliably informed me that Wullie NEVER actually had a surname.
Hope this helps ........lol |

Wattie Russell was a wartime private in one of the Scottish regiments, and occasionally visited Wullie's family. It was never revealed whether Wattie was related on Wullie's father's or mother's side of the family, so Wullie's surname may have been Russell. Uncle Wattie, spelt Watty on his kitbag, was always greeted with affection by Wullie's mother, which could indicate he was her brother. In one amusing sketch, Wullie donned Scottish dress, including a kilt, and sneaked into the camp where Uncle Wattie was billeted. Wattie tried to smuggle Wullie out, but was seen by the colonel who rewarded Wullie, for testing the camp's vigilance, by giving him a lift home in his chauffer driven staff car
The strip was printed on 32 July 1939 in the Sunday Post.
According to google Wullie was based on Ron Law and Soapy Soutar was his best mate Ian Soutar. So maybe he was meant to be Ian??
Wee Eck I think must have had a dad named Big Eck?? Well my bother was wee John cos my father was John so maybe that was it?
The twins in the Broons : well I was really bored today!!
And found this on Wiki: Although one is called Eck (short for Alexander), they are always referred to collectively, with few exceptions having Granpaw calling them: "ae twin" and "the ither twin"
OK I will hold my hands up and hang my head in shame I am really bored today!!

According to an article I found online, there was one strip published where Watty's kit bag appeared with Russell on it but you're right Shona, no one knows if it was his mothers or his fathers side.
I'm too am bored as fuck right now.... |

Spot on. It was felt that giving Wullie a surname would mean he couldn't be "Oor Wullie! Your Wullie! A'body's Wullie!" as he was often referred to.
I suppose, if he had to have a family name, it'd be Tamson - to reflect the fact we're a' Jock Tamson's bairns. |
