the belt was a great thing , the guys used to have bets to see who could get the most, and it kept the riff raff in line .now look at kids - no respect for others especially adults
the parents allowed it because they could belt the kids as well before nanny state banned it .

Our teacher played a game called Beat the belt.
One question wrong you stood up, 2nd question wrong u went to stand at the front of his desk, 3rd question wrong you got belted. How was that good practise when there are clearly children with learning issues who just could not remember stuff as well as others. |

Got the belt a few times at school, one teacher demonstrated the force he could use by putting an old thruppenny piece on a desk along the grain of the wood and used the belt to drive the coin into the desk, he was not one to be messed with. The worst part was if a belt missed the hand and wrapped round the wrist. |

Yup. Once or twice for fighting in playground. Once I moved my hand when he went to belt me then he doubled up the hits. I probably deserved it. Cheeky boy. |

I have 3 sons who are all respectful and well behaved.
I have never as much as lifted my hand to any of them and I certainly wouldn’t allow anyone else too.

"Who got the belt at school?. Still shocks me to thinks this happened and amazes me how parents let it happen." I got the belt a few times but the worst was from a nun teacher who thought it was fun to walk up and down the rows of desks and if you didnt notice her behind you and got caught talking she would whack you over the knuckles with not the flat side of a ruler but by the edge of the ruler .
I remember some of the kids who had it happen to them walk about with scars on their knuckles for weeks.
I dont think that would be allowed now ever infact I dont think it was allowed even then but it happened . |

I got it a few times got to say I preferred it to writing a thousand lines or whatever . Nowadays I feel sorry for the teachers as they’ve a hard battle to control a class of teenagers , not that corporal punishment is the answer the choices now for staying behind after school or suspension are neither wanted or supported by parents or school staff .

agree one good thing about the belt was it was quick and over and done with. as for these days suspending a kid is just giving them a holiday. |

i will add that some teachers were a bit ott when handing out punishments but when used properly it was a deterrent and it worked. teachers these days have a hard job and the amount that get assaulted by pupils has grown. |

Im too young to have had that experience, but do believe if it was still a thing kids would have far more respect and responsibility than they do. Instead of this disrespectful, spoilt, entitled society they are being brought into.

In the old days it didn’t really matter that you were well behaved. On occasion you may just have been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Different times , thankfully long gone. |

They used the cane at my school. Used to cane your hand and try their hardest to just catch the tips of your fingers for maximum pain.
Never did me any harm though. Used to piss myself laughing when they missed. Which inevitably resulted in more strikes of the cane. ![](/icons/s/rolleyes.gif) |

I got the belt for coughing in class - a teacher at our school was obsessed with germs and anyone in class who coughed or sneezed got the belt - she got fired for keeping a pupil behind in class for an hour and his parents complained- bear in mind that detention after school did not exist |

I got 3 of the belt in high school just before it was banned late 80,s I think. I also I remember a teacher twisting the hair at the back of my neck in P3 think I was 7, she was a really nasty old woman
It was acceptable back then but doesn’t mean it was right. |

I got nine of it for throwing a paper plane out of a window 3 from the teacher who class it was, 3 from teacher who class was below, and 3 from asst head just because he could, just thugs really, with a licence to abuse kids really , can you imagine social works investigating them now, that keep them busy would have nice to have bumped into them later in life gave them a slap let them know how it felt

Same in Aberdeen, teacher belted your left hand you shook your right. We had a league table. But truthfully we knew the score, step badly out of line you got belted. No damage done, but something to be avoided, so you generally kept behaved.
Same lesson as if you step in front of a bus its going to hurt, so dont........
Im all for taking it back, and the extreme end the death penalty for all acid throwers, rapists, terrorists, planned murderers, top end drug dealers, and those gang members that knife people. And above all paedophiles.....a few months of the punishments being meeted out would bring a massive fall in associated crime. Look at the opium wars in China and how the introduction of the death penalty their almost wiped out large scale opium dealing. |

We had great teachers in our Aberdeen school all who could belt you with some power, another punishment was in gym if you misbehaved you bent and grabbed your ankles or as low as you could and everyone else took off a gym shoe and belted your arse, if you didn't hit hard enough you got hit as well. Ah memories of Kaimhill. |

To say children misbehave more now because corporal punishment has been outlawed is a bit of a cop out. I don’t deny there’s been a rise in bad behaviour with teens but corporal punishment is only a small part of that. Violent movies and video games contribute. As do ease of access to pornography at a young age. Add in a rise in single parents and a fracturing of the wider family support network. For family’s who are together there’s the fact that a single income no longer is enough to support a family so both parents have to work. Women now drink more so are not at home as much and lack of a good male role model all contribute. Add to that the rise in gang culture it’s a wonder any of us has good kids but lots of us do because despite these factors lots can cancel out these negatives to bring out well adjusted kids |

Belt was banned when i hit 2nd year. Had it a few times. Was a definite deterrent. Especially if the teacher could draw it. After that it was lines. Crap. And a sin bin. Was like a holiday camp then. Nanny state took away the discipline that some needed to focus more on education |

All those in favour of bringing the belt back into our classrooms also in favour of the same draconian practice being brought into our workplaces? No. Can’t imagine anyone would be happy to accept being smacked about with an object by the boss for minor misdemeanours while going about your work.
If children of today are not “respectful”, then I highly doubt that it is because they are not being physically abused in their classrooms by those in a position of care and trust ![](/icons/s/rolleyes.gif) |

I got the belt for not stopping two other kids fighting. It was a1980 and I was 10 years old. I came home for lunch even though nobody was in and I didn’t have a key. I was in bits and when a neighbour took me in and called my mums work she went to the school and threatened the head master with the police and said he would be charged with assault. The old prick of a head never liked me or any the scheme kids but after this event he seemed to be a little more polite to me. |

I had the belt on quite a few occasions, it should have been banned 100 years ago.
Beating someone as punishment is never an answer to any problems.
Btw
I find older people have a lot less manners than young people. |

Maybe it's inherent?
Antisocial parents raise antisocial kids.... And the cycle continues.
eg. In my school, i respected the older kids. When i was in sixth form, the young'uns would shout back and insult the elders. There's certainly a general change in adolescent liberation. |

I got the belt in P2, I think it was more a frighter than anything else as it wasn't sore. I dare say if it wasn't ruled out I would have had it more.
I do have a cheeky side but all in good humour
