I have lived here for a couple of decades but am not a local...Some only want to hear how friendly and inclusive the Scots are...Most are, but like anywhere some are horrible ,rude, bigots so same as everywhere else then

Quite a lot of people on here like to tell you what they think of you but quite frankly I care more what people in the real world actually think and even then only a select few of those I’m close to.

So no actually couldn’t give a monkeys

I have my faults , I also have my good qualities . Theres always will be those who focus on the negative or blatantly ignor anything positive. Fortunately I'm too old to give one damn about what ramdom folks think of me .I am who I am and have those close to me who think I'm ok despite being a menopausal, cold hearted harpy .Those are the ones who actually know me and only ones who's opinion is of any value.

I would love to know. If anyone is willing to pm me with a visual and psychological analysis: please do.

My guess is that I come across as, insanity personified

A handful of people's opinions matter to me. As for the rest of them, as the saying goes "what other people think of me is none of my business."

Why not? I'm not one of those deluded enough to think I'm perfect and others' perceptions MUST be wrong. Might be interesting for my own personal development. There are certainly more than a few people who could do with a dose of reality.

I'd love to say I don't care what people think, but I'd be lying. I think the older you get the less it matters. Though I'd probably learn more from the detractors, those tend to be the people who's opinions matter less to me.

Thanks for the replies, born of a pub debate on the famous poem “To a Louse” by Burns.

The poem ends on a simple proverbial note-

O wad some Pow'r the giftie gie us

To see oursels as others see us

It wad frae monie a blunder free us

An' foolish notion

What airs in dress an' gait wad lea'e us

An' ev'n Devotion

This last verse contains the often quoted lines and shows Burns depth of understanding of human nature.

Note the capital P in Pow'r denoting God.

This last verse translates as

Oh, that God would give us the very smallest of gifts

To be able to see ourselves as others see us

It would save us from many mistakes

and foolish thoughts

We would change the way we look and gesture

and to how and what we apply our time and attention.

Interesting comments.

Sometimes I'd like to know but other times I'm glad I don't .

An old friend once told me he wished I could see myself through his eyes. He was very sweet.

"Would you want to know? "

If I feel nosey... Only the people I care about.

The others... am not that bothered as it won't make me change the way I act or the way I am.

I am me. The good, the bad and the ugly

Best advice my old grandad gave me was when I was a kid and was being bullied by a kid I desperately wanted to be friends with.

He said not everyone in the world will like you, they will meet you and just instantly take a dislike. Same as I may meet someone and just instantly take a dislike to them for no reason. No point wasting time just accept what people think and move on

The meaning of the oft quoted last verse was the topic of conversation (with much amusement I will add despite the serious slant). My thoughts were that oor Rab ponders that perhaps we might view our behaviour differently if we saw it through another’s eyes. My friends saw it more like most of the above comments. Thanks to all for commenting

Some people should and would be appalled by their behaviour if they weren’t so caught up in themselves and took a step back and looked at themselves through others eyes

There’s nothing worse than someone who complains to you about the way others treat them yet they treat you with the same contempt they have been complaining about

Pretty much what the great man was meaning I think
