new car question

been looking around car showrooms for a new car and I just noticed how many now have the indicator stalks on the left-hand side which on long trips I would find tiresome trying to change gear and indicate at the same time so my question is what make has the indicator stalks on the right-hand side of the steering wheel ? so whats your model and is it left or right?

Strange that you have found car with indicator stalks on the left.
ISO implementations and Euro regulations back in the the early 2000’s forced car manufacturers to “standardise” controls for vehicles.
Hence why most vehicles have a familiar layout in the centre console like the hazard warning switch, radio and heating controls. All in the centre at easy reach.
Back in the day it was mostly Japanese cars that used Left Hand indicators.
Honda and Toyota changed this first for their European market.
What new cars were you looking at?

Can't remember ever having driven a car with the indicator on the right. Both back home in the EU and here. Driven Fiat, Vauxhall, Toyota, Renault and the occasional random hire car and all have indicators on the left x |

I must admit I thought that manufacturers changed the indicator stalk some time in the 80's to early 90's as a cost cutting measure.
It used to be on the left for a left hooker and right for right hooker and at the time left hookers were globally more in use than our right hookers were was my understanding of it.
You may still find some slightly older cars etc that still have the old right hand of the column setup though!

I've never owned or seen a car with an indicator on the right ! How strange
Also... you shouldn't be using the indicator and changing hear at the same time anyway ! Surely you would indicate your turning off at a safe distance and then begin slowing down/changing down gears so cars behind know what your about to do ?

Most cars have indicators on left. Kia’s have it the other way round, causing all sorts of shenanigans and strong language the last time Mr Pf had to drive one. Windscreen wipers instead of indicating does not a happy driver make  |

i was just wondering where most are located as for changing gear and using indicators at same time obviously not and bedroom stamina and long drives to wales etc are two completly diffrent aspcts of tiresome.lol i have looked at audi some mercs are on right hand side but when i first bought cars most but not all were on the ight i guess its just what your used too but i would preer it on right i guess its just out of habit one or two kia. nissans.and hyundi appear to have models with stalk on the right still but still undecided what make and model to buy , cheers fo all the comments |

I get that with changing gears when I'm in a car with the steering wheel on left hand side. Bang your hand against the door, instead of on the gear stick

Previous cars, Ford and Mercedes on the right of the steering column. I drive a Kia now with indicators on the left, the amount of times I’ve went to indicate and the screen wipers came on was unreal. You soon get used to it though! |

Must have money to throw away on new clutches. You could always just drive off tho, the handbrake disengages itself. |

Most Japanese manufacturers (Honda , Mazda etc) used to have the indicators on the right hand side. My last 4 cars have had the indicator on the left and the new one I bought last month is also on the left. |

This is the least of my worries whilst driving ...
Ps.. you could indicate first then change gear or vice versa. Or just buy a car with an auto gearbox and leave the manual gearbox alone..... |

I have a c class mercedes coupe and indicator on the left automatic gear shift stalk on the right |

Most/near all European cars are left, Japanese cars Toyota etc are right handside. Just means for the first few weeks you put the wipers on full beans and make unannounced lane changes |

Now I'm sat here trying to remember where my indicators are, I've never actually paid attention I just automatically do it but if I were to guess I would say left.
I wont rest now until I know for sure |

To be honest it's not just the handbrake we have three 4x4s for different things. I use an old Isuzu Trooper from 1996 It's a cracking old workhorse with a handbrake in the middle, the gear stick and the 4x4 range control stick next to it and everything in it's rightful place.
Then I use a new shape Nissan x trail that is loaded with gizmos and has no handbrake lever it's automatic as well so if you stop on a hill it won't roll backwards and you don't need to hold it in gear either! Bonus!
The Mrs and kids use a Range Rover and it honestly is the strangest thing ever to drive it has nothing, not a handbrake lever, not a 4x4 range lever and even no flipping gear stick! Nada, nein, nyet! It's all buttons and gizmos that will inevitably probably break!
My advice? Buy yourself an older motor older is better! |

To be fair if anyone is struggling, like really struggling over indicators being on either side. They should be handing back the license  to Kellogg's cereals where they probably acquired it |

I retract my general Toyota comment then, I've just driven toyota Hilux's and there all on the right. Just use the hazard lights. People will give you a wide berth. |

it was not about having problems changing gear i always drove cars with a right hand stalk everything from TR7 , MG midgets scirocco and they were all great cars it was just something i noticed in a dealers and had me wondering what cars still remained on the right , and not many by the looks of it i guess you just feel comfortable driving in a format that your used too cheers tho for all the comments give me food for thought on my trips around the dealers cheers |

Japanese imports have the indicators on the right for right hand drive cars. As mentioned earlier on, the EU mandated they need to be consistent, hence all cars in the EU left or right hand drive are on the left. Perfect for left hand drive, slightly more awkward for right hand drive. |

There really isn't an issue here. No need to indicate and change gear at the same time. Remember! mirror, signal, manoeuvre. Think most cars have the indicator on the left now. That's what I was taught anyway "lights on the left, rubber on the right" |
