"I think Tebaldi, I particularly love her rendition of Un Bel Di from Madame Butterfly. Jim"
Yes, there is no one who sings Puccini better than Tebaldi, although Caballe and Barbara Hendricks are inspiring too. |

quality not quantity: for me, there is still enough room to love both singers.
Callas, for the drama and the risks that she took. Her expressive voice and acting ability.
Tebaldi for the beauty and sheer technical brilliance in her voice and its creamy richness. |

i have to say i much prefer callas, and in particular her recordings of the verdyi operas, but her performance in the rossini barber of seville recording in 1957 still takes my breath away every time i hear it.
tebaldi may have had a technically superior voice but in my opinion sometimes lacked expression and emotion in her recordings....just saying lol

yes, well observed! The studio recording of Callas 1957 'Mad scenes' Veridi's Lady Macbeth (which also has Donizetti's Anna Belna and Bellini's Il Pirata is one of her best recordings.
She must have had the kind of 'ugly' voice that Veridi wanted for Lady Macbeth.
Montserrat Caballe took a couple of lessons from Callas in Callas's flat (from Norma) . Caballe said that she had been offered Macbeth, but Callas told her it wouldn't be suited to her voice, saying that her voice was beautiful and Lady Macbeth needed an 'ugly' voice. x |
