I heard today that the SNP's Transport Minister is spending £85K on an investigation into the possible opening of a new station on the west highland rail line. . . To service the Faslane Naval Base. . .
Is this the same SNP who tell us they aim to close the base when/if independence comes around?
Any one else heard this?

You got proof they said they were closing it? Surely an independent Scotland would have its own navy so would need a naval base? |

Irrespective of the UK/independent future of Scotland. The UK nuclear fleet will be based there for the foreseeable future, which will increase the traffic going through. And it then has potential future as the 'Scottish Navy' if that future comes to pass.
85k isn't that much for that sort of feasibility study, given the need for geographical surveys, etc. And could provide a boost to the area. |

"I believe the snp have said
"Faslane has a bright, non-nuclear future as a conventional naval base for us and our allies and partners.“
"
Scotland might park a Scottish fisheries protection vessel there. That's as close to a warship as Scotland will get.
The huge site that is the base will probably revert into what it was first built for . . A maritime scrap yard.
Progress eh?

A site where people still work and need to get to and even if it was to close and there was no Scottish navy as you’ve mentioned it’s a large site I’m sure there’s a million and 1 things that could be built on it and a station would mean less cars on the road |

Don't want to sound a dick, but did you read the article or just the headline?
The second paragraph of the article says exactly what is being said here, that the site would be used as the hq for a Scottish navy upon independence.
It also goes on to say that the site itself is going through a big expansion with the current UK sub fleet moving to be housed on the Clyde.
So to me this type of study makes sense, as an expansion like this would mean an increase in cars travelling there and this would be a good option to avoid that. |

"No disrespect ..
Why are we discussing Politics when theres a designated Forum for Political Chat ?
"
This. A bit like old firm threads, all it achieves is limiting potential meets with 50% taking the polar opposite view. |

Maybe because this is the Scottish forum page and Faslane, the last'time I was there (yesterday), is in Scotland. . .the thread doesn't just cover the political angle but the social, economic side too. A lot of people depend on this base..so as far as I can determine its quite at'home here in this forum page. |

Maybe it would make it easier to get to faslane if you don’t drive to work at the base. Here’s hoping |

non political point of view, the west highland line stops at helensburgh upper, garelochead, arrochar+tarbet then ardlui…
For those dependant on buses or taxis the train does let you go to Fort William, Oban or Glasgow…. Anyone stuck on the congestion along the loch side knows that trains seldom get cancelled although the recent rain disruption did occur in remote track line..

Political or not its still Scottish, so why shouldn't it be discussed here.
If you don't want to read it then just scroll past it, that's what I do with most of the threads on here. |

They previously explained Faslane would be HQ for any Scottish military, which yes prob would be fishery protection vessels, we don’t need huge warships and bombs.
