Or you could not expect the government to solve every issue in your life and get on with dealing with things yourself. Do you have pir sensor lights out your back door. There as cheap as £6 these days. Do you have cameras. £200 for a set of 4 good quality infrared cams and a few signs up.

Or you could be more pro active and get yerself a baseball bat. £5 on ebay.

Being serious here , thats whats wrong with the whole world these days , people need to take more responsibility for there own lives instead of being a victim and blaming the government.

Of course some people are victims and can do nothing about it but in the OPS case here what prevention methods does he have. ?

Just moved to a new house no lights round back have alarms installed just last week and cctv at my front door that connects to my phone. Never have and never will expect the government to do anything. It’s a new build estate and I think they are targeting it as a lot of people don’t have security in place yet

Now as the gentleman above has said somebody trying to get in his back door ! Happens where I live to and been told by ladies who live on their own so very scary stuff as well for them ! Along with your arses of Scottish Government and to save money they release Criminals early to save money so the government can pocket your tax money! This includes rapist etc so what I would say to you regardless how much security stuff you have for your house you are still not safe and why should you have to purchase security equipment to stay safe !After all you pay taxes to pay for Police etc ! Lastly would also say the gentleman may not be as well off to buy this equipment to so stop preaching to others that have had a fright and think before engaging conversation!

I live somewhere quiet and safe yet in the last 8 months we have been robbed twice during the day.

I expect the same people both times as they knew the items they took would be replaced.

I also think they have probably been watching us too.

It's a horrific feeling and worse still, both times my son's got home before me and discovered it.

I'm well aware in my case it was completely my fault. First time I'd left the key under a plant pot for a contractor and 2nd time under a mat for my son because he keeps loosing his. (I now have a key safe hidden away)

However I rent my house privately and the agents were useless. I paid to get the locks changed myself after the first time.

While I agree security stuff might be a deterrent, I don't think it always works. My neighbours have cameras everywhere and have also been targeted in the past.

I reported the first one to the police and was honestly treated like I was the one in the wrong. So much so, the second time I didn't even bother.

I get the police are under resourced and in the grand scheme of things it was a small thing when they have other things to deal with, however their attitude was awful and that's not how it should have been.

I got done about 18 months ago and was upstairs sleeping when it happened. Security camera showed they’d been in the house for at least 35 mins and I had a pick up as my company car at the time and they had actually packed that with my stuff!

Cameras showed them coming in and out the house packing the truck as if they were professional house removers and they had baseball caps and scarfs around their faces so no chance of recognising them and I stay as what I class as a really nice area but I guess they target this just the same as other areas!!

I heard the car starting which woke me and by the time I got downstairs they were driving off and I tried to unlock the door they’d locked it from outside and left the key in the other side so I was locked in !!

The main issue with this, is that the government has left us in a limbo of sorts. The police won’t follow up on anything. (receive a crime number to claim on insurance)

If we’re to physically protect ourselves then, WE may be the ones to end up in court.

Where is the deterrent?

Our government no longer cares for its citizens, it punishes the good more than it does the wicked.

There have always been burglars and thieves, and there always will be.

All we can do is to try to deter them. But if we are successful, they just move on to the next house.

Listening to Radio, Everest are claiming that their windows locks will resist a burglar for over 15 minutes. I keep thinking, how long will they resist a brick!

15 minutes? That’s all? That’s pretty shoddy if you ask me.

You’re also correct, there have also been thieves and crime. I reckon there’s actually less crime now than there ever has been. In the age of the Internet, we just hear about the negative far more than ever.

Hope you're ok. Possibly my worst nightmare with two young kids in the house and I know, without a doubt, that my Mr would be downstairs setting about them if we found someone in our house. And that scares me even more as you've no idea who you're dealing with.

Other than the baseball bat idea , yes my advise would have been exactly the same.

My van was stolen from and my daughter in laws house was burgled while she was alone in it, simple prevention methods would have avoided both. While hindsight is a great thing, i am not saying deterents such as lights and cameras and a cheap house alarm will guarantee no thefts etc, simple steps will make your next door neighbours house way more appealing an opportunity than yours. Not suggesting for a minute thats a good thing making a neighbours house more appealing than your own house is a good thing but that brings me back to my point we all have to take responsibility for our own wee lives and properties. Maybe that why the police dont investigate these types of crime any longer, or maybe it is a resource issue. Either way we all know thats how it is so do we complain or put up extra security lights etc. Im for the latter.

I had a person get into my house when I was alone with my yo kids which totally freaked me out and as hedevil has said I defended myself and them, what he doesn't tell you is after you defend your self you will get arrested and charged with assault and you will go to court and if you have a good lawyer they might get you off.

Would I do the same again I really don't know cause in that moment things happen and everyone will act diffrent.

We have now got people in the world who blame the victims of crime and no mater who the victims are it should never be their fault

The police are a deterrent as are all the things you mentioned and it shouldn't matter what defence system you have on your home the point being if there were not police cuts and more being done to make us all safe and not "victims" then these scumbags trying doors and breaking into houses would probably not be so bold

Round here it’s a regular occurrence but then so is the sound of shouting, doors getting kicked in and windows smashed so most folk don’t even bother to see what’s happening in case they get dragged into a fight or tend to sleep through everything me on the other hand I wake up slightest noise, I’m in court as a witness for reporting hearing a window getting smashed, did see anything but still up in court on plus side for me my dogs start barking if the cat farts in the hall lol

You are bang out of order Sir! You are roughly same age as me and you will remember the days when police where on the streets and hardly a crime took place and over the years Governments over the years cuts back on Police etc .

This is almost laughable this post, no disrespect intended.

I remember the days when the cops could kick fuck out you and yer wee neds were to afraid to commit the petty crimes for fear of the visit to the back of the van thats why there was less crime back in the day you speak of, not the petty fines they get now. Thats nothing to do with cop numbers, thats to do with the percieved, entitled society we have nowadays that even though yer a wee dick and can steal a satnav from a car , at worst you will get a paltry wee fine every visit to court. You say you shouldnt be expected to protect your own home ? Because you pay your taxes. Lets just hire a cop for every street eh . Cops dont even investigate car thefts or break ins any more and thats a fact. Lastly the gentleman you speak of already has said he is aware of attemted break ins in his street so he understands he should make his property more secure.

Bry when it happens to you, im sure the government will see you alright since you pay taxes. Or maybe they wont and you will remember this conversation tonight.

You are spot on from your opinion their and those days people respected and some feared the Police as what you say is true just sadly also as a lady said on this reported break in to police and were not interested which to me would say that was down to individual Police who should not be in the Job !

Sad though you have to go to extremes to protect yourself and property.Maybe I was a wee bit strong in my words last night as it pissed me off when OP had posted if so I opolgies got this and have a good weekend "

Nothing to appologise for bud , but appreciate the sentiment.

Its all just opinions nothing more and we all have them. The lady that said the cops done feck all but just give a crime number for insurance purposes was exact same as our 2 experiences. Maybe its resources maybe its bureaucracy as there is so much of that and attending courts etc, im not surprised theres no cops on the streets . There all sitting about in courts all day waiting to give statements that last 5 minutes.

E.K . Glasgow

These folk aren’t opportunist’s any more they are well practiced people observers . Looking for weaknesses in folks behaviours so they get an easy payload .

Sadly due to the under resourcing of police services mostly all you get is a crime number to give to an insurance company for your claim .

Unbelievable these days what happens more and more these days this is happening and time the government needs to gets it act together and have police walking the streets and this would not be happening ! On a better note I leave my back door open hoping the lady 4 doors along comes and visit ! Sigh !
