Genuine mistake/misunderstanding or egotistical, racist cockney wanker. What do you all think? Not a fan of royalty by any stretch of the imagination but to draw a comparison between a child of mixed race and a chimpanzee.....well it’s all a bit “Love The Neighbour” and Jim Davidson’s “Chalky” character isn’t it? |

Personally I dont think he meant any racial slur whatsoever..
I think it was more aimed at the royal family being a bit of a circus act. Or likely a dig at inbreeding...
For the record I think danny bakers an annoying no mark twat, but the racial allegations?........ Nup, no buying it. |

"Nope not buying it was a mistake.
Nobody in there right mind would think that was ok to post.
And I'm not a royalist whatsoever."
Same. No way did this muppet (with a history of getting into bother with his bosses for inappropriate comments) not understand the undertones of what he posted. Also, I'm very much not a royalist and don't give a toss that there's a new baby, but to tweet anything insulting was unnecessary.
His firing is no loss; alas, he always seems to crawl his way back in. |

I am aware of Baker. He is actually a pretty good broadcaster but I totally get why people don't like him. I don't think he is a racist but the Tweet was totally bizarre. It didn't even make sense for what he claims it was, a critique of the Royal Family. I'm sure that he probably knew what he was doing in his head. But Twitter takes no prisoners. |

Jim Davidson's "Chalky White" character was based on a real person, a guy who Jim grew up with. . . And Love Thy Neighbour was from a time when all this P C crap hadn't even been thought about,
Baker must have known that this would outrage, a failed publicity stunt for a failing celebrity career? |

No idea if he intended this or not but just makes me glad I pay little attention to social media. So much scope for misinterpretation by audience or manipulation by posters. Truth and message gets lost and left behind. |

I tend to agree with you. As I said previously I know that the guy isn't stupid. But he does this? As you say exposure, he'll be in the jungle next but I didn't think that was his bag |

I personally don't think he's racist. Foolish for what he did, yes, but racist, no.
I'm not his biggest fan, but I can appreciate he's a very talented broadcaster who has had a good career. He won't be out of work for long. |

Ok I do understand the reference of race and monkeys but in the 60’s and 70’s it was common to have chimps dressed up for entertainment. Typhoo Tea adverts used chimps for years. Does that mean we can’t say things like ‘Do you think i came up the Clyde in a banana boat?’ Just you need to watch Rising Damp, Love thy Neighbour and Alf Garnett for what we used to think was acceptable.
If the LGBT community can reclaim words and make them positive can we not reclaim the original innocence of a chimp in a suit?
People seem to be overly sensitive at times. |

As someone who has actually met and spent time with the guy, he isn’t racist at all.
However, that being said, this tweet was extremely stupid and not funny. I kinda get what he was trying to get at but it was an epic fail. He was simply trying to satirize a situation and it went badly wrong. He freely admits he doesn’t always ‘get’ stuff on the internet as he was always a pen and paper writer and broadcaster.
For the Met to investigate IMO is ridiculously stupid and a total waste of resources and money. Those officers could be finding knifing suspects and murderers instead. I doubt it’s a job any of them wanted but I suspect it was foisted upon them by a superior so that the Met can’t be called racist for not investigating.
Just for the record, I don’t think it’s acceptable in any shape or form to use or imply any racist terms towards anyone of any race, creed or colour. It happens to me here in Scotland because I’m English but I don’t go running to the police because it’s a small minority and I choose to ignore these people as they don’t affect my real life. In the same way that I shouldn’t think a tweet by a 60something guy will have affected either Harry, Meghan or the baby.
Just my two penneth

That sentence just hit my Racism alarm to 10. Defending Jim Davidson, good luck with your rep. In life. |
