Timing. Everyone feels a bit more flush mid-March after Xmas and new year. Weather is usually picking up. End of November... Everyone is thinking about having to do the Xmas shopping and planning Xmas nights out  that's my theory any way!

Basically because the Irish sold St Patricks day more. You will probably find most countries celebrate St Pats day more than their own patron saint.
Don't blame the Irish because we are shite at selling St Andrews day |

You can't "sell" a day as a commercial thing without a source of identity.
And you can't begin to imagine to sense of community and togetherness that still exists throughout Ireland if you haven't experienced it. Especially outside the cities and which is typified and exemplified by the GAA. That doesn't exist so widespreadly in the vast majority of countries in the world.
It's a celebration of national pride and identity! And before I am accused at having a go at the scots again there is a real apathy and lack of pride towards all things national (except for the occasional flourish with the rugby team) in Scotland in my experience. So if you don't make a big deal and celebrate being Scottish yourself on your national day why would anyone else care? |
