It's been on the radio news that Hawaii is considering a new law to make cigarettes available only to people over 100 years of age. It's certainly one way of cutting down on the numbers of smokers, especially as not many smokers probably live to this age. Personally, I can't shake the ridiculous image of an old man of about 90 stood discreetly outside a shop, wobbling with his walking stick and whispering to an even older man about to enter, "Hoi, mister! Gonnae get me 20 fags with this money and I'll meet you round the corner in 5 minutes?" Maybe that's me just giving away some of my teenaged years secrets...
Do you think this is a good/sensible idea and do you think there are other products we should look at changing the legal purchasing age for? |

Seems like a weird thing that they couldn't just ban them. Unless it's something to do with overarching US laws? So it has to be legal to sell them but each state can choose an age restriction? In that case, it's a good idea.

An outright ban just wouldn’t work. No one’s just going to stop smoking just because it’s illegal. It’s comparabke to the prohibition of alcohol in the early 1900’s.
I would assume that by increasing the legal age limit over time, as the generations pass by the general population will be weaned off of using them, at least in theory. It seems to have fairly good long term connotations. |
