Teach me something new - socialising

Jump to: Newest in thread

Just wondering how many of you like me have kids and find we’re stuck at home bored a lot during the day when the kiddos are at school ?

My physical and mental health has taken a hammering last year and I want to be a lot more positive this year, a group of us are already looking to get healthier by sharing our food diaries and walking together.

So it got me thinking how many of us want to use fab not just for sex but to socialise and have a laugh with likeminded folk we can talk to about the stuff we can’t share with most folk ? Judging by the socials id say quite a lot. So what I was thinking was how many of you would like teach/learn/share hobbies and skills with others ?

I love cooking and I’m fairly good at it but always wanting to learn new recipes, having a come dine with me style afternoon where we cook and eat and chat together sounds like fun, not sure if anyone knows any community kitchens that allow folk to use their premises ? Or even just meet up and bring along some tasties each week and share recipes !

-

-

I’ve got a sewing machine it was bought as a gift for me a couple of years ago I’d love to meet with folk who know how to use one and could teach me ?

-

I ski and had my skis serviced last year and didn’t get a lot of opportunity to hit the slopes, I’m not great but anyone fancy hitting the nursery slopes if we get the snow this year ?

-

-

I’ve picked up a few lovely crafting skills o know other folk find it therapeutic anyone else want to give crafting a go ?

-

-

I’m pretty handy on the tools and can turn my hand to most household diy, anyone struggling to get their house decorated ? Want to give flooring a go etc

Anyone else feel like they are stuck in a rut and need to fill their time more constructively but have barriers ? I’m obviously saying daytimes

Because of my circumstances but does anyone else feel like they want to do more ?

And yeah I’m

Hungover and over tired and talking shit but hey what’s new lol

I was the same many years ago, was a single parent so had to adapt for work/socialising and figured out I was best giving up "normal work" and become self employed so I could work at home, then figured it was easier to socialise during the day then working at night while kids busy/sleeping. Worked perfectly, ok daytime drinking of frowned upon but meh

lol, I'm sure something will come of this as there are some brilliant ideas.

yeah I suppose I'm more for the social side, as you very well know, good wee laugh and chat and a wee spill of coffee now and then ffs

I'm very limited time wise and coach at least 4 evenings a week so time to socialise is hard for me so I suppose people like me this thread would not be suited for

There was a cinema social last year all because a couple of people were a bit scared of going to see a horror movie all alone, think about 10 ended up going and it was supposed to be a brill time so things like that can be easily arranged I suppose.

good luck and nice wee post for new year ad be good to think something comes of it

Unfortunately I am unavailable during the day.

Great post and I’m sure many will pick up on it, a new year and a new done. Good luck with your health issues and do whatever you want that helps boost it.

If I can get a day off I’d love to try some of the ideas you’ve mentioned. I’ll keep an eye out.

Best of luck

Jay

You're Very talented with all those skills.

I used to use a sewing machine years ago. Have an old singer at home. If it's a new sewing machine, they're usually designed to become easy to use. Nowadays i hand sew instead, but takes ages!

I'm not a parent, but do get occasional free day times. Your post seems a good idea. Good luck

What a lovely post

I’m not married or have kids but my job does mean I have the daytime free.

If you want to go to go skiing (although I snowboard) I could do with some practice. The indoor slope at Braehead is good (and pretty easy) x

Awww I can’t do daytime.

Weekends for me.

I’ve started dry January so will see how long it lasts this year. Last year lasted a good few months.

I’m Interested in a come dine with me scenario. Possible focused round healthy eating.

If I didn't constantly have at least one child attached to me during the day then I'd be up for that will hopefully have one day a week soon, just school hours, so depending on where that could be good

Interesting idea Violet.

I'm self employed and work from home and can be flexible some days.

Interested in expanding on my limited cooking abilities in particular. Or a new sport.

Amongst other things (that may be of little interest to most) I could offer some beginners tennis (not a coach) or help someone kick off a blog. Quite arty/crafty.

But Fab might not be the best place to organise such skill swaps- investigated a few social groups based on location and activities a while back which might be more appropriate.

Well it’s all about people’s comfort zones but I know some girls have had days out with their kids in the past I’d never exclude anyone from anything I did if they wanted to bring their kids along

I mentioned a Fab Badminton mini tourney recently but never got any interest. Hiring a couple of courts for couple of hours for 6 people would be pennies, then up for an afternoon coffee.

Probably a bit of that but I was meaning organised groups that met in person for hillwalking, sport, foodies and the like. The intent was to get out and do stuff (non Fab lol) and make new friends. x

Probably not allowed to post the site here if I found it again.

fecking love the lecht

It was my first sample of skiing, anywhere. never tried it before and went with my ex, who could ski.

I'm one of these mad people who will try it and learn from getting hurt n not to do it again

I remember watching skiers for half and hour and then went to the top of one of the mid range slopes, really high for a novice and the ex went first and then I realised I didn't know how to stop so I asked the person next to me, she was under 10, and she showed me and then I jumped . I was 24 at the time, fecking lucky I made 25, I can tell you.

One of the best things, that no other Scots ski resort had at the time, before health n safety kicked in was..... wait for it....

big 10 to 14 person rubber dingys. You sat in the dingy with about 10 other persons, NO seatbelts etc.. Then you wur pushed off from the top of the slope, if you hit a bump, everyone would fly up in the air and usually land back on the dingy, sometimes not but you came off sore. The last time I did it, we hit a huge bump and we all flew up in the air, really high, I got kicked in the mouth and at the end of it, I came off, blood pouring from my lip and nose and I was screaming "I wanna do it again, I wanna do it again".

Now they only have small one person rubber tyres to slide down

Brilliant place for a social, was there last year

The Lecht isn’t the best, Cairngorms is miles better. If you can learn in Scotland though you can ski or board anywhere

Braehead is probably better for learning, but they take a dim view of beginners as they prefer you paying for lessons ....not against the rules though

I’m loving these positive replies, going to speak to Caroline about using cjs, she seems

Pretty open to the kitchen cooking idea and once folk know each other and trust each other etc. Can maybe invite folk round and cook at home, cjs is a big enough place to mingle, ideally before or after daytime events or maybe even at the weekends there’s something on ? Well Saturday is the girls walking groups first outing that should be fun, fell free anyone to PM me if you fancy coming along and we can see about trying to get some other things organised over the next few weeks
