We stayed at the ibis just off the Royal Mile over the summer and it was OK - depends how nice you want. There's a little bar at the front door and I don't think the staff would blink if you met someone down there or walked in with an extra person or two as long as you have your key card to get in the lift/door to the stairs.

Try looking on trivago. We have been in a

Few times lately due to visiting for the rugby. found the apartment blocks quite good. Check in at the reception then the apartment block is separate with keycard entry so no embarrassment when trying to take people back. Also stayed at the premiere inn hub hotel off the royal mile. Again no staff it’s all automated self check in so gives freedom. Definitely found the trivago site cheaper roughly around £70-100 per night

Urban village at Crewe toll...I've had a meet there fully dressed and you can go to the rooms without passing reception.

The Sheraton is good.

Visitors don’t need to do the walk past reception to get in.

Easy to access and right in the town.

There are superb apartments across the road from the Carlton Hotel, really really nice and great value for money. No worries about reception as there isn't one. We booked online. Another decent one is Stay Central at the 3 sisters pub, quite noisy, but not a bad thing if you plan on having fun.

Stayed at the Caledonian hotel back in 1992 really good. Met a good man in the bar there. Great room with high ceilings. We keep promising to stay there again.

Somewhere nearby

Hampton By Hiltons are usually pretty decent because they are quite new. Often really good deals as well. Huge beds - which is always a bonus and decent showers that are big enough for two (not that I would know, definitely not speaking from experience... ahem... )
