Flicking through Netflix last night trying to find something worth watching and came across a film I hadnt watched in over 20 years, Mississippi Burning. In light of the current rise of racist/far right groups, Boris the Bastards comments about Bhurkas, the mass adulation Tommy “The Tit” Robinson receives from his knuckle dragging acolytes and Donald Trumps barely concealed Xenophobia it made me think....has society really evolved as much as we think it has since the heady days of Civil Rights in the 1960’s? Which film or films havw you watched that you found thought provoking and made you take a less parochial view of the world in which we live? |

Freedom Writers
When I think back to school and all my classmates trying to get on and excel but all with different back grounds, some with disfunctional families it was so hard for some whom I bet felt isolated at times, like the film. What's worse is today I work and try to develop some amazing kids who some have the same trype of background.
Be great to have everyone without any worries n who can enjoy life and develop and totally express themselves.

So many movies!
On the top of my head I would say.
'The help' a fantastic book and movie.
Make me think of the simple things I take for granted such as sitting where I want in the bus, etc...
To your point about society's evolution.
I want to think we have but then... something happens and I realise that only 'some' have evolved and that 'some' have been left behind with no hope to catch up any time soon |

"I recall seeing the Killing fields in the cinema and it blew me away. "
Made me weep unashamedly. Can remember the Cambodian famine of the late 70’s that arose from the same Khmer Rouge brutality. Excellent film! |

Even reading the Courier front page today shows how little things have moved on, and Trump/Brexit aren't helping. |

"Has anyone seen “My Beautiful Laundrette” a very early Daniel Day Lewis film? Talk about thought provoking! "
Ooh! Not seen it in years!
'Chocolat' also a good movie with Johnny Depp, Juliette Binoche and Judi Dench.

The crucible for me, watch the movie at least once a year, seen the play, never get fed up with reading the book, shows how way back then how easy people it was for people to accuse you of witchcraft for their own personal and selfish gain or as means of revenge, very much a staple of society today minus the witch burning.
And second favourite is Of Mice And Men
Shows how easily people are judged to be something they are not, and it’s a wee sad one. |

Welcome to Sarajevo.
Bloody Sunday.
For me both films dug beneath the mainstream media view and the political establishments failings to deal with real life issues because it was happening far away and the bigger political game was far more important that the individuals life.
Both sad testimonies to life |

The Rabbit-Proof Fence
Good Will Rising
Harold and Maud
Guess the common theme to them is that you never know what asunder the cascade of a person until they are pushed to show it and that the weak may become great. |

"Idiocracy - a daft comedy/satire but also a warning on where we're headed, esp with people like Trump in office "
We're already there. Check out the TV channels and make a mental note of the countless reality programmes that earn non entities fortunes just by acting stupid and crass. Idolising and holding up people like Jordan, Kardashians as role models for young folk. |

""The Music Box"; the one in which Laurel & Hardy attempt to deliver a piano to the top of a huge stairway.
It very much speaks to the impossible and unavoidable stuggle of humankind. "
So very, very true! It's also incredibly funny! |

A Few Good Men - Pure Class
Shows you how one in power can lead to them thinking that they are invincible, untouchable and do anything they want
Donald Trump anyone |

Serpico with Al Pacino. Speaks volumes about corruption and integrity, an older film but still relevant .

Remember going to see Grease when i was 13. I came out of the film thinking that if you are good and behave you get nowhere but if you drink, smoke and have sex you get everything you want. Actually think i bought fags the next day to look cool. |

"I Daniel Blake is a great movie that covers so many emotions.
There's Humour, anger, love, respect, protest an so much more in the film. Just a great watch."
Not ashamed to admit I cried watching that, especially the end. I'm not some Corbyn loving leftie but it infuriates me to think people can be treated like that, especially when so many lazy scumbags play the system. |

Nothing wrong with being a Corbyn loving leftie . Anything by Ken Loach will automatically get my attention as he is usually bang on the money with his social commentary. Daniel Blake is such a brilliant film. |

I think that was the last film I cried at too. So sad because it's true. |

"Once were warriors. Great movie from New Zealand.
Wow didn’t think anyone knew about that. A huge boost for its stars career. "
Seen it a long time ago, brilliant film, even though one scene is infuriating for lack of a better word, but karma settles the balance in a way. |
