Diets are a short term fix. To lose weight and stay that way you need to make some lifestyle changes for the rest of your life.

Work mate used the keytone diet I think it was basically cutting carbs but upping your fat. Lost two stone in two months. Not healthy like but a fast fix type thing.

Fasting...Read up on the 5:2 or 4:3 fast method. And there's a lot of science to back it up.

Not read all the replies but I know cutting out sugar it really really hard. A friend done it and said he felt like it was a scene outa trainspotting. Good luck.

My friend lost loads of weight but refused to call it a diet, she just age vegetables for literally a month morning noon and night. Called it a detox. Lost a amount of weight and thing like her skin and energy levels went through the roof!

Good luck keep with whatever you try!

Land Of Naughtiness

It’s how people perceive weight loss. All diets are short term fixes. Psychologically people have to be ready to want to loose weight to get in the correct frame of mind for it to be successful.

The way I look at it is healthy eating and I have reduced my portion sizes and eat from a side plate. I cut out fizzy juice completely and just have diluting juice. Eating healthy snacks protein based works for me. I also increased my fluid intake to fill me up more and get less hungry which has worked a treat. Another factor is our preparation for our meals. We are all so busy in life that the easier option most likely wins. I always make meals up in my slow cooker and freeze portions so I always have a healthy meal. Ohhhhhh and alcohol needs to be cut out too. There is a crazy amount of calories in booze. Now I need chocolate

Eat every three hours. Drink at least three litres of water a day.

Eat salad with no dressing, veg, turkey, chicken, tuna, sweet potato, one steak a week for iron and fruit. Don’t have fruit smoothies though as all sugars combined are not good for you.

You’ll see the lbs fall of you.

Do some training too. Don’t think just because you’ve lost a few lbs that it’s all body fat. You’ll lose muscle too. So maybe do some weights

This is a very similar story to me ! Another thing I focused on (after being given advise by my son who plays sport and has a whole myriad of sports scientists available ) was to not mix complex carbs where possible and to use unrefined carbs also . An example of the change this made was normally I would have chilli with a baked potato and some rice , now it is one or other and I use brown rice ! Another thing I was not aware of was the differing types of fiver that can have a large influence on body metabolism , there are some fibers that are better than others , there are a lot of good articles on the web ! The other focus for me was what I drank , I moved away from fizzy (almost never drink it now) and I removed drink completely from during the week and when on a big push completely altogether , also wen you are starting to think you are hungry, have a drink of water , if you remain hungry have something to eat !

On top of this is the usual obvious stuff, you are going to struggle if you snack and like massive plates full of sweet stuff !! But that is obvious !

Message me if you want more details as to what I did , I have lost more than and kept off more than 3 stone with some simple changes !!

Another thing to remember is that the body only converts fat into energy !! Very little is waste is produced from fat burning , and most of that is C02 !! As such balancing energy use to consumption is key , an active person can eat literally thousands upon thousands of calories in a day , if you do not exercise much at all, then you have to remember that your energy use is low and as such you need to balance that intake , I know again that seems obvious , but it points to the fact that all this stuff that talks about disolving fat and getting rid of it other ways is likely bollocks unless it is massively speeding up your metabolism (the thing that makes some people realise smoking helps them keep weight off )

The body definitely does not only convert fat to energy. In fact, it will use almost all other energy supplies first - removal of fat is a "survival risk" (as far as the body thinks), after all. And a very active person might NEED those huge calorie numbers for recovery purposes and to maintain/make gains whilst still working hard - that's a very different position to what you're describing. It is extremely hard to lose weight with a poor diet just by exercising more and more...

Note also that it's body fat percentage and actually measuring yourself / seeing your clothes sizes changing over time that is more important than watching your weight. Muscle weighing more than fat, if you focus only on your weight but workout well and put on muscle, you're liable to mistakenly think you're failing on your diet.

As mentioned above: eat sensibly, cut out most (not all!) of the things you know are treats, drink lots more water, and get plenty of sleep. Not sleeping enough makes it very hard to lose weight. Oh, and be less stressed about your weight, as being stressed makes it harder to lose fat (fun, eh?).

Be careful with Diet/zero sugar drinks, as the aspartame can cause you to gain fat if you drink loads, but similarly double-check the calories in your diluting juice - I went for a while wondering why my weight wasn't shifting on a calorie-restricted diet and drinking loads of water, only to find I was drinking about 1,000 calories a day in Ribena because I too dislike plain water

My best tip is to forget about your weight and instead have fun exercising and eating more smartly, stay positive and realise it's about long-term goals and generally improving your well-being, mobility and energy levels.

Oh, and check out Jeff Nippard on YouTube for great vids on exercise and weight management.

It’s not easy and takes a bit of dedication, I spent the full of last weekend buying in ingredients that I needed and preparing food for the whole week.

Sadly the only time I've ever managed to drop a lot of weight was during my divorce. Unfortunately I gained it all and some extra back!

I don't actually eat much but that's the problem i think.

More protein, more water and more exercise whilst reducing carbs and sugar are probably the best way for me to do it. Everyone is different though. As someone else said you have to be in the right place mentally and emotionally to do it.

"Diets are a short term fix. To lose weight and stay that way you need to make some lifestyle changes for the rest of your life."

So true. It's a constant battle for me to keep my weight down. Sex with other people is a great incentive to keep fit. No snacking between meals, cut down on bread, pasta, potatoes. No fried food. I did have some chips back in January. Still dream about them. Avoid low fat foods as they are generally laced with sugar. No desserts, have fresh fruit instead. Be more active take an hour walk everyday. Have sex at least three times a week. On days without sex masturbate at least once whilst thinking about the last time your partner was fucked by another person.

It all helps to keep my weight down.

Someone mentioned the body coach / lean in 15 program.... it’s fantastic! It’s a total lifestyle change and it actively changes the way you look at food and exercise.

Carbs are essential to a healthy diet and the body does need them.

High intensity interval training (hiit) is the way forward.... it boosts your metabolism and builds lean muscle.

It’s a 90 day plan with the theory that after the 90 days it will become a way of life.

We done it 2 years ago and we are still going strong

High protein and low carb foods combined with exercise and sexercise lol is the key

I buy food from Healthy lifestyles .. all prepped for you and deliver to your door ... I struggle with time to prep my own food so this is easy for me .. started in Feb and lost 22lbs along with a fantastic trainer and my hobbies .. so many diets out there ... I don't see it as a diet, it's a change of lifestyle and healthy eating, healthy life .. works for me

"Someone mentioned the body coach / lean in 15 program.... it’s fantastic!

We done it 2 years ago and we are still going strong "

I tried that but with working shifts it was hard to stick to the exercise regime

I think it needs to be approached in stages. Trying to do too much at the beginning will lead to most people falling off the wagon. Also expectations have to realistic, which differ from person to person.

The basics are to burn more calories than consume. Once you get used to keeping an eye on that you can then focus on the types of food and getting the balance right.

Couldn’t recommend buying and using a Fitbit more and also downloading ‘my fitness pal’.

I used to get up at 4am and work 13 hrs, 1 hr travel home I couldn’t face getting up at 3am and by time I got home I was too knackered.

The food was great was just the exercise. Find slimming world and running fits in with my lifestyle much better and I’ve lost way more.

Diets are not a one size fits all so to speak, you’ve got to find what works for you

Download MyFitnessPal on your phone and track your food. That way you can assess the good and bad in your nutrition, and track your progress with goals.

I lost about 30lbs in five months a few years ago. Used a FitBit, along with MyFitnessPal, and kept a food diary. Really easy to scan barcodes and save meals etc. Weighed myself daily, tried to do my 10000 steps most days, and found seeing all the data and having graphs on a downward trajectory was all a big motivator.

Wasn’t a diet as such, more just changing a few habits, and getting a better sense of how much I should be eating. So smaller portions, especially with things like rice and pasta weighed out, and realising just how bad bread is, and reducing that a lot.

I need to cut out the fizzy juice. I like the idea of slimming world but I don’t eat enough to make it work x

I hate water. So i go between diluting juice and fizzy flavoured water oh and fruit tea x"

fresh fruit juice with tonic water is a good alt also

Cutting out bread, Chinese and Indian buffets, a bowl of porridge for breakfast, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon for lunch and grilled chicken and salad/veg for dinner. Lots of soups too. Being veggie is an advantage I think

Someone very wise once told me it’s better to be 100% good 80% of the time, than 80% good 100% of the time.

Basically be as good as you can be during the week, but have whatever the hell you like at the weekend. Well, within some sort of reason at least.

"The body definitely does not only convert fat to energy.

Oh, and check out Jeff Nippard on YouTube for great vids on exercise and weight management."

Maybe I did not explain myself well enough !

Fat in the body is only converted to energy and primarily CO2 (what you exhale) it is not converted to muscle or anything else you pass out the body (within reason)

My point is you have really 2 options if you want to get rid of this fat, because as you say the body will do the easy stuff first. These are effectively lower your energy intake or increase your energy requirements ...or.... do a bit of both !

For most people a change in their approach to eating and exercising is needed , it is all about some determination and self control.

Understanding how the body processes what you eat , and when, as well as understanding what foods actually contain can be a great enlightener to some people as this may quickly identify an eating Habbit that plays a fundamental part in their weight gain. Mine was beer, fizzy drinks, excessive portions (outwith the takeaways of reasonably good food) and takeaways !! The changes for me were some you mention, hydrate not drink, control portion sizes allowed me to still eat many of the foods I liked, minimal changes in diet to include things like better carbs at appropriate times, and cut out the weekly takeaway pushing this wee treat out to Monthly! Once I had lost it it was easy to maintain , even allowing a glass or two of wine at the weekend , the habit has now formed to simply eat the correct things almost without thinking off it !

There are lots of great web resources that can help you , Livestrong is one that has some great guidance on nutrition and lifestyle tweaks that can help ! Fundamentally I believe most people now fully understand the basics of what they need to do in terms of better eating and exercise, but it’s the determination and drive, and also affordability, in this very fast paced world we live in that are ball ache to muster !

I have lost 7 stone by following macros . Basically calorie counting but broken down into protein fats and carbs .

As long as you eat less calories you consume you will loose weight , no matter what diet.

Everyone's assumed fat loss but what are your goals? Do you want a quick sharpen up for a beach holiday or better long-term health?

Assuming it is fat loss and you want it to stay off and be healthier in the long term, my advice would be to seek out a PT or a dietician (specifically a dietician, not a nutritionist) with a track record of working with people who were in similar situations to you who are now where you want to be.

Note, a good PT/ dietician should educate you and work with you to make subtle life changes in the direction you want to go, not count your reps or charge you to oversee cardio. They shouldn't be your motivation or your accountability.

Well done you ! Guess most points of view above were tweaks were all it takes and that appears to be working ! Great start !

One wee thing I fought was that the change slows as you loose more weight , don’t get disheartened and keep up the great work!!

Well done again!

It's back to SW for me. This time last year I had lost a couple of stones but then life threw me a curved ball and it all went to pot. Anyway, new start. I know it works so just have to do it.

Was very interested in the comments about aspartame. I'm trying to stick to water and give the fizzy diet drinks the swerve. I don't think they help me at all.

It's nice to see people trying to be helpful and positive. Good luck OP.

I think the group thing spurs you on to make it work. You get ideas and encouragement at group. According to the slimming world reps I have encountered, those that stay for group have better weight loss.

Plus it’s a red neck getting on the scale and being told you’ve put on!
