As a single guy who, unfortunately, spends a lot of time alone, I'm looking for ideas on how to get out and about more, meet new friends and new people, and wondered what other people had maybe done to fill their spare time?

What’s this ‘spare time’ you talk of?

"What’s this ‘spare time’ you talk of? "

Usually the miniscule amount of time in between hoping you get hit by a bus, and not caring that you have wine stains on your shirt.

Get a dog. Great company and a good way to combine exercise with meeting people

I have a dog, who doesn't do too well with other dogs, so don't get the chance to interact with other dog walkers. I'm usually having to go the other way.
