Lowland Scots

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I've just been told to speak English by a user on here because I used the word "Aye" I must admit I was taken aback as coming from the lowlands we still often converse using our Mother Tongue of Lowland Scots.

Just interested in other peoples views on this comment, would you consider this to be racist or am I just being too sensitive?

I do want to point out that this is nothing at all to do with the Independence debate or Politics in any form. More to do with being Scottish and our heritage.

He is English but lives in Scotland, I did of course inform him that we do occasionally speak in Scots and his response was Scots isn't a language. English is.

English is a hybrid of French, Latin, German and old Norse.

Love the way differnt folks from different parts of the country speak, some accents are incredibly sexy and that can sometimes come across in the written form as well...as for anyone complaining there should be a fuck right off icon

I was going to reply it's no big deal but when I see he then claimed Scots isn't a language then that just proves his ignorance. Scots is our traditional language.

Devils advocate here. I would have said that,"aye" is a general Scottish slang for yes, rather than lowlands Scots. But that is my opinion.

It is not a word I use personally and I am Edinburgh and Scottish bred.

Most of the northern counties in Englandshire say aye. Further south though I do find certain persons use your accent to give themselves heightened sense of mental superiority, but generally those people are not worth the time of day.

Tell him when in Rome...aye
