So who do you tip

.

We do the usual 10% when eating out, £1 plus for taxi's,

change in coffee shop tip jar, couple of drinks worth in a bar, etc.

.

But help us out with a wee debate we had amongst ourselves.

Where we live nobody's bringing hot food to your door lol,

so when away it's a sheer pleasure to have good food delivered to you

.

We usually give the delivery driver a couple of quid, however

this doesn't seem fair to those that cook the food, what does everyone else do ?

I tend not to tip anyone. If I'm taking a taxi or eating in a restaurant with table service I'll tend to just not take my change. I did give my tattoo artist a tip because he exceeded my expectations.

And it confused me why you tip some people and not others. Why tip the person in Starbucks but not the cashier in Asda? Why tip your hairdresser but not the mechanic that services your car?

Cue the hate.

Can't abide rudeness oldie but goodie

.

Yes we're tipping for service kola,

but we tip better if we've really enjoyed the food too,

which would be hard to do that with a delivery service.

Bunkie this isnt aimed at you lol but..

If I get in a taxi and the person does not make any contact during the journey then I don't tip a taxi driver

Hate that!

I tip my hairdresser because it's her own business I don't tip supermarket cashiers because their not allowed to take anything.

im involved in a service that involves delivery drivers and alot of the repeat customers were unaware that the drivers keep the tip money they believed the were tipping the service provider.

the customers now either have accounts or tip when there in person.

You're absolutely right LandS, it's a mixed up mess

Although, in asda you do the work shopping yourself

the hairdresser/barrista is "probably" on low pay

while the mechanic "probably" isn't lol

That's interesting to note kola.

It would be hard to justify us having an account for one off's

but will look for a way to add it to the payment system.

No idea, I'm lost. Damn Sat nav!

A couple of years ago when I was in the states we had lunch which came to just under $36 I tipped them $14 bringing the bill to $50.

We asked the girl who was our server where a shop was that we wanted visit, she gave us the details.

Once she saw our tip she just stood there and said $14 tip really !

I was so angry I asked to speak to her manager but she soon took off at that .

Think she thought she deserved a bigger tip for giving us directions to the shop.

The purpose of tipping is to make up the terrible wages in the States. In Scotland our minimum wage is excellent and you can easily live a decent life on it.

I only tip if the service was excellent and their face wasn't tripping them.

Depends who you work for... most will either put it through your wages or what we do is take it out in cash as soon as we cash the table off

20% of the bill in the states which means I gave her almost double as she had given us the info to shop but that still wasnt enough for her lol

Most reputable businesses take nothing to do with tips and it’s down to the employee unless it’s on a card then it will be taxed, the not so reputable will collect the tips and give the staff a very small cut n keep the rest towards wages. I know of a few places that do this, and have worked for some (not for very long) I always try to make a point of asking if they get the tip, If they say they don’t then the tip goes back in the purse

That's a great bit of insider information

Up here the tips tend to go in a pot and get shared out between all the staff.

Being a coach driver getting all kinds of hires, tipping is a rare thing now.

On tour, away for 10 or 14 days, all over the country yes, tips can be earned

I get embarrassed however when I do a pensioners day out as they always tip. These are the people who can't really afford it so when they have a wee collection for the driver I always suggest it's put into their club kitty. That would please me more than receiving their honourable gesture.

Then you get the wedding parties, company nights out . . You do numerous drop offs that aren't on the job sheet, virtually getting them to the front door cause they're too pissed to walk and not a penny. . They'll happily piss £60 up against a wall yet not even a word of thanks never mind a tip.

Tipping used to be a regular thing. Whether you were a waiter/waitress, taxi driver, or any other thing to do with hospitality. . Today kids aren't taught to be generous, they don't see their parents doing it so in their adult years tipping is almost alien to them.

If you don't go out for drinks, meals, tip people for a nice service, then I suppose you could have a decent life.

Until the boiler, washing machine packs in, then you have to find the money from somewhere else.

Somewhere nearby

I tip good food and good service. My hairdresser/eye brow lady/make up ladies get tips. Taxi drivers if they are chatty, or help me with bags etc.

In restaurants I never add a tip to the bill, I give it direct to the server.

And at Christmas the scaffies get beer and the posties get a box of sweets.

Oh and the removal men (move a lot with work) get butties/lunch/fish supper depending on the time of day, plus beer at the end, and if they’ve plumbed in my dishwasher/washing machine they get some cash too!

I always tip takeaway delivery drivers. Always a set £3, as it helps them make up their "wages" for the shift.
