My opinion, its based on evolution and instincts.
In the good old caveman days, potency, strength and the ability to produce offspring were centred around a "penis".
Many cultures worship the symbols of a penis and it features in a lot of ancient history.
Just because we have computers and mobile phones does not stop the instincts.
We have gone from dancing around fires naked to draw a mate to penis selfies as advertising.
Cultures will still base "manhood" on a penis.
