In evolutionary terms, proto-chickens laid the first egg which hatched to produce a chicken... Ergo, egg came first.

Not a chicken.

I always reckon the answer to this is that the egg came first if you're an evolutionist (for the reasons given above), and the chicken if you're a (judeo-christian) creationist (because the description of the creation event suggests that God created all the animals in their adult forms).
