Hello everyone, looking for any suggestions to help my brain shut off so I can grab at least a few hours kip. I've been watching a DVD then reading and now I'm in here Feels like torture because I'm shattered. Xx |

Been having problems sleeping too, but the only thing that seems to help is a visit to the gym! Went Friday afternoon and was bedded by 10.30pm. Usually i'd be up and down until 3am ish or longer. |

Sleep,whats that? I have serious trouble with insomnia coupled with pain from knackered hips and joints.....
that's my excuse for being grumpy,i`d say it`s a nightmare but they require sleep!!! |

'Lights' in eyes and brain stimulation are not good for people who have trouble sleeping. Maybe try to disconnect before going to bed, a warm bath, drink, relaxation music for instance can help. Dim the lights before bed and no lights if you're listening to music.
Oils like Lavender, flowers/herbs like Camoline and Vervain are helpful to induce sleep and soothe the nervous system.
It will take time to override the habit, you will have to teach your brain and body to get into a new routine.

Try a pillow between your legs when in bed. Sometimes the pain is caused by a problem in the alignment hip/knee.
You will have to work out what thickness works for you by folding the pillow and see what's best for you.
There are pillows designed specifically for this issue that you can buy online if you find that the pillow between your legs works.
Massaging your hip and knee with arnica gel can help as well as gentle stretching of the hip.

I'll second this (both points). There's quite a lot of evidence on the matter.
Those fantastic screens that our smartphones and tablets all have are pretty bad for it - the light they emit has quite a strong component right in the range that triggers the light sensor that regulates your body clock (hence keeping you awake). At the very least start reading with the brightness fully down near bed time.
The active brain thing is also a problem. Facebook, forums and other information drip feed mechanisms give you small dopamine hits each time you read a new tidbit, keeping your brain active and possibly also triggering further emotional responses depending on the content (steer clear of the politics forum at night ).
Current advice seems to be to steer clear of all such things for an hour before bed.
Someone above also mentioned exercise. Exercise is good if you're feeling stressed because it helps reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and boosts serotonin levels. Serotonin is one of the "happy hormones"; lack of it is often linked with depression so exercise can also be a good way to get yourself out of a depressive funk (which might be another reason for difficulty sleeping).

Try Spotify and search for relaxing music or sleep. It has gentle relaxing music to relax and help you sleep.
There's also an app called Calm and that helps too.
Try some lavender on your pillow or in your room. |
